NO PLACE FOR OLD PEOPLE IN OUR WORLD

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in NEWSWEEK,FEBRUARY 25,2008)

The onslaught of globalization has categorically raised questions , pertaining to the survival of elders in the small Asian countries .The ever-widening gulf between haves and haves-not besides bleak future for the elders in Japan have brought the Japanese society on the verge of fragmentation . One needs to ask the policy makers why they have failed to make way for old people in the so-called new globalized world ? The cycle of abuse and violence against the the elder class of people has not only gripped the Japanese society but also become a marked feature of the Indian society as well . Here too, most of the programmes , aimed at improving their quality of life , have fallen prey to red-tape and present-age complexities .The government is unable to offer them the post-retirement benefits like cheaper health-care and travel concessions , to name a few . The way elder couples are being attacked by anti-social elements in metros and elsewhere has become cause of worry for the police .Worse, the contractual nature of jobs in modern India and rise in nuclear families have further marginalised the old people , subjecting them to sad aberrations and unholy developments . Well, it's time to ponder why our social and economic set-up have not been at par with the requirements of a globalized world ? Needless to state , let's save them from the unexpected twists and turns of modern times .

SMALLER STATES : CAUSE OF WORRY

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS INDIA, FEB.24,2008)

One is stunned over the atrocious political moves of the leaders at the helm of affairs . The creation of smaller states would only weaken the nation .Why do they forget that new states , more often than not , create dangerous geographical imbalance besides burdening the Centre to hunt for infrastructure ? It's there for everyone to see that Jharkhand , Uttaranchal and Chattisgarh have not made any substantial progress in all these years other than leading to wastage of exchequer's money .Worse , there are chances that battle over water may soon start between UP and Uttaranchal . The policymakers should realize that it's political will and timely execution of well-carved policies which change the fate of state . Let them not commit the blunder of converting populist beliefs into reality .

GORDON BROWN : LEADER WITH A VISION

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Gordon Brown displayed that he is a pragmatic leader with head and heart acting in sync with each other . He , therefore , was little hesitant in askng India to take a substantial stand over Mynmar's issue . At the same time , he didn't think twice in seeking India's support to curb the menace of terrorism . He also assured India in unambiguous tone of Britain's support in ensuring a berth for India in G-8 and U.N.Security Council . Overall, Gordon Brown's visit takes Indo-UK relationship to a greater height .

BENAZIR ELIMINATED

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS ECONOMICS , FEB.29,2008)

The assassination of Benazir has shattered the hopes of arrival of democracy in Pakistan . Ironically , her worst fear that she could be eliminated at the hands of terrorists turned out to be true within no time . It's shocking that adequate security arrangements were always missing in her rallies even as the possibility of a terrorist attack loomed large over head . The brutal death of Benazir once again brings to the fore the harsh reality that in Pakistan the hard-liners are the real controller of everything happening in Pakistan . Anybody who dares to challenge their supremacy is bound to meet a deadly fate . Needless to state , Military is hand-in-glove with radical gropus , who are not interested in installation of democracy in Pakistan . Today , Pakistan has turned into emblem of insecurity and unstability , with Military-Mullah axis becoming stronger with each passing day . Musharraf , the picture of pity and helpnessness , can't do much other than making false promises of total elimination of terrorism . Even Mr. Bush , more or less , feels safe in remaining blissfully ignorant about what's actually taking place in Pakistan . Ultimately , the burden to usher in real changes has fallen upon the shoulders of the people of Pakistan , who are , at present , shell-shocked and totally confused .

INDIA SHOULD NOT JOIN SPACE RACE

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS SPHERE , FEBRUARY ,2008)

India need not to enter in space race , wasting huge sums of money in projects having nothing to do with welfare of people .The developing countries cannot have the luxury to materialise space dreams at the cost of problems plaguing the downtroddens . However , one cannot ignore the fact that the ISRO's grateful accomplishments have changed the face of India .Right from it's beginning in mid-1970s , it has been involved in several key projects aimed at social benefits . Yes , our space programmes need to be people-oriented , helping India to frame better disaster relief operations , mapping of agricultural areas and locating new groundwater spots . In sum , the space programmes need to make substantial contributions to the development of India instead of being swayed by flashy manned
missions .

ARCHITECTS OF DIVIDE AND RULE

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in TEHELKA , FEBRUARY 23,2008)

The Maharastra Navnirman Sena eager to assert itself on the political stage of Maharastra chose to enter into politics of divide and rule . Raj Thackeray's villification of Amitabh Bachchan and his party's violent attacks on the North Indians are the part of well-calculated scheme to provide life to his political ambitions .The only way to ensure peace and stability is to marginalise such dangerous minds from the mainstream politics . However, ever-growing number of immigrants in many states has definitely led to rise of complex problems for the localites . Even the significant contributions of the migrants are not sufficient to ignore the fat that population explosion is turning the metroes into ticking time bombs .To end this menace it has become imperative to provide employment to people close to their original homes . Ironically , creation of new state would only worsen the siutuation .It's not only geographical division but also division of people grown-up with me and mine perceptions .

The introduction of the Red Ribbon Express is a good move to create awareness about AIDS. Given that casual sex is no longer considered taboo, it has become imperative to make youngsters aware of the spread of AIDS . Sadly, the train till now has chosen only premier stations as halt stations. It needs to stop even at minor stations, especially in the rural belt .

INDIA :TIME FOR A REALITY CHECK

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Well, if boom in the IT sector and increased participation of MNCs in shaping the Indian economy are the bemchmarks to evaluate growth of nation then surely India is firmly placed on growth-track . However , I don't agree with the fact that India is beginning to live up to its expectations of visions carved in 1947 . How could one ignore the fact that there is sharp decline in ethical and moral standards in present generation ? The new globalised order of things have given rise to culture , which has no place for weaker section of society .What about the rise of coailition politics , which has produced political leaders with devilish interests , leading to fragmentation of the nation ? One also needs to take into consideration the fact that a vast section of society has been denied the benefits of so-called ever-increasing 'growth rate ' . The vision of Gandhi and other leaders was to strengthen the villages since they formed the essence of India . However , the entry of reatil business and emphasis on rapid industrialisation seems to derail the hopes of village-based economy . Ironically , we never expected this sort of development , which comes at cost of cultural and religious beliefs !

THE MAKING OF NEW RAMAYAN

ARVIND K. PANDEY

(Published in THE WEEK , FEB.24,2008)

It's very smart and very tough to think of recreating timeless televised epics like Ramayan and Mahabharat . There is bound to be comparison between the earlier Ramayan and its new version since the former has left an indelible impression on the hearts and minds of people . Chances are great that only fringe benefit is gained through the whole marathon exercise . However , we are living in a different age and , therefore , it's not a bad idea to bring out the essence of Ramayan in a new format . Ramayan , being the supreme meeting point of ethical , moral , social and spiritual values , offers many shades to experiment with . Surely , a sincere and honest approach in its making would turn it into darling of the new generation . What made the previous Ramayan make inroads into the souls of people was that it maintained a safe distance from commercial interests . Well, one expects same level of understanding and seriousness from its present makers . Wheteher or not it leaves a political impact , let's hope it ushers in cultural transformation in the society bereft of values .

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in INDIA TODAY, FEB.25,2008)

Even France's recent frustration over its failure to successfully execute deal worth $650 million via supply of 197 helicopters to the Indian Army could not prevent its President Nicolas Sarkozy from stating " This is a strategic partnership ,the sky is the limit " . Interestingly , France's offer to sell its civilian nuclear reactors is bound to reduce our dependency on US in near future . From India's point of view France's declaration to help India in gaining specific exemption at Nuclear Suppliers Group is a development in the right direction . Needless to state , such generous frienss are necessary for India to tackle enemy nations around us !!!

SRI RAMAKRISHNA :THE OCEAN OF BLISS

ARVIND K PANDEY

( PUBLISHED IN SOHAM ,FEBRUARY,2005)

[TODAY WE ARE CELEBRATING HIS BIRTH ANNIVERSARY]

It's beyond human intellect to comprehend in totality the attributes of a real Master. Why? Because to know Lord you have to become Lord. Sri Ramakrishna could undoubtedly be hailed as supreme incarnation of the Parabrahman. He is the perfect role model for the enthusiastic seekers who wish to merge their identity in Lord. Ramakrishna is regarded as the real Master by their disciples. While laying down the characteristic of qualified teacher Sri Aurbindo stated "The master is one who has risen to a higher consciousness and being and he is often regarded as its manifestation or representative. He not only helps by his teaching and still more by his influence and example, but by a power to communicate his own experience to others"

Sri Ramakrishna graced this divine land on February 18,1836 in a village named Kamarupkar. Ironically, the decent representatives of Lord always appear at times when the atmosphere is laden with confusion and chaos. As a matter of fact they are like gentle wind amidst the fury of demoniacal interests. Other than human garb, which they use as a mean to wonder among us like an ordinary soul, there is no other point of similarity, which allows to strike a bond with these rare souls. Ramakrishna had a unique childhood. Even then he was in league with his "sublimity of his aim and the one-pointedness of his application to them". Once the person who was chosen to play the part of Shiva in a play, named "Conversation between Shiva and Parvati", was forced by the circumstance to withdraw his name at the last moment. Ramakrishna got the chance to provide colour to the role of Shiva on the stage. No need to mention that he transcended the human consciousness while playing the part and for next few hours remain lost in that particular mood. His childhood provides a glimpse into his bent of mind stuffed with extraordinary perceptions. Ideally, it allowed him to gain insight, which invariably shattered the illusions of this dreamy would.

In his village school, when others were busy in parroting the sterile instructions of the teacher, he toyed with ideal which was not normal by any standard in that age. "What purpose will it all serve-this hard study, this sitting up late at right, this rumination of the glosses and commentaries? Will this help me in attaining the truth? "Obviously, he did not wish to end up as ‘finished product’ much like his school teacher. He rebelled against this sort of teaching system which enabled man to sail in the ocean of materialism with ease. But in the process extracting a heavy price for teaching this art of deception. We are unconsciously turned into monsters that trample other human beings without any trace of remorse. It wouldn’t be out of place to observe that in our times the realistic education has come to mean the ability to laugh at the miseries of fellow beings and name it pragmatism.

On of the commonplace assumptions regarding the bent of mind of Indian saints is that they lack scientific temper. In other words, they just swallow the facts owing to their inability to discern them in rational ways. The reality is otherwise. Ramakrishna passionately followed all through life that "He shall accept anything as true only after having subjected it to close scrutiny. If it stands the test, I will reduce it to practice. And I shall not look down upon anything of the world if it is not demonstrably untrue". This may be the reason why apparently antagonistic soul like Narendra could hardly resist from surrendering his dreams at his feet. This curious mixture of both these worlds-the earthly and the heavenly-created deep impression on Vivekananda’s mind who didn’t take much time to be the vehicle of his purpose. So much that he openly confessed that "Ever since our first meeting, it was the Master alone, and no one else, not even my own mother and brothers, who had uniform faith in me. That faith and that love of his have bound me to him forever. It was the master alone who knew how to love. He did love, while others only feign to love for the sake of their self-interest".

How intimate was their relationship could be gauged from this hilarious incident. Once Ramakrishna offered the Hookah to Narendra. Perplexed looking Narendra could not turn down this strange offer. He stopped smoking after two or three puffs. The Master then took that Hookah and as he was about to smoke Narendra, stopped him to remind that he should first wash his hands and then carry out the smoking business. This infuriated Ramakrishna and what followed was display of ecstatic mood mired in uncontrollable anger-a familiar sight for Narendra having spent a long time with him. "You rascal, you are awfully conscious of differences" uttered Ramakrishna before gaining normalcy. The smoking session moved ahead with that very Hookah which Narendra had sealed with impunity with his lips.

In earlier year of Sadhana, the group comprising of Narendra, Kesava and others was greatly influenced by Western Philosophy. Narendra however, tried to counteract the charm of alien literature. Something so evident when he quotes Hamilton who felt that "where philosophy ends there religion begins." It wasn’t easy for the Master to de-construct these minds shaped in convictions gathered from here and there. Even Master was bit worried about their flirtations with bogus reading material. "I hope he did not do so because some Western scholars had expressed that opinion."

Under the influence of Western Philosophy Vevekanand held the opinion that God unknown and unknowable. Ramakrishna came to intuitively apprehend his dilemma regarding the true nature of Lord. He advised Narendra to seek the Lord’s grace which he said could result from sincere prayer offered from heart aching for Lord’s darshana. Such feelings when condensed in form of words may read like this "O God, I don’t know Thy nature, do Thou manifest Thyself to me as Thou really art". Vivekananda, who earlier medicated on formless Brahman with attributes, decided to anticipate Lord in its real form. So he started praying "O Lord make me fit to see your real nature". What the Master wanted to convey through this episode was that the Lord couldn’t be governed by any particular belief. He has form and lo and behold formless as well. And thus Narendra bid adieu to doubts in this regard. Being now aware of His glory Swami Vivekananda suggests seekers to unite their heart and mind with the fountain of all bliss." Seek for the Highest, aim at that Highest, and you shall reach the Highest."

Sri Saradadevi, the divine consort of Sri Ramakrishna, also considered the Master ‘embodiment of bliss itself’. That is why she advised seekers to rely on Ramakrishna in order to remain above the pangs of worldliness. Vindicating the fact that Ramakrishna was not an ordinary soul she said, "Really and truly Sri Ramakrishna was God himself. He assumed this human body to remove the sorrows and sufferings of others". According to the holy mother Ramakrishna played the part of both Maheswara and Maheswari. All through her life she translated into action the will of Master. Perhaps, she has known too well that Lord alone is the real and the world illusionary. It’s really hard nut to crack to cross the ocean of desires partially owning to seeker’s bent of mind but more largely because of Mahamaya’s mysterious designs. "A person may have no relative anywhere but Mahamaya may cause him to keep a cat and thus make him worldly. Such is her play", observed mother in lighter vein. Unmistakably it may sound pessimistic had not she sent supreme souls to show us the way amidst drama of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. The moral of this whole story is that a soul must take refuge in these Mahatmas (super souls) if he truly wishes to strike an eternal bond with Lord. Such souls alone provide security blanket from the onslaught of worldly desires.

A man who is in sync with sincerity of his purpose finds himself sooner or later in company of the Lord. Let us never forget that real aim of the individual wondering on this planet is realization. Other than this all other concerns are bound to open the floodgate of misery. In this journey towards the Lord the company of godly souls acts as a catalyst. Our intrinsic nature compels us to return back to our source. It’s only matter of time when the restlessness to attain the Highest germinates in our heart. Indeed, the life goes in waste if it is not used as an instrument to establish perfect communion with the Lord. Finally, I would like to refer to statement of the Master, one surcharged with mystical undertone, which establishes his tie-up with the Lord - All those who are living their final lives in the world will come here, and all those who have, even once, truly called on God cannot but come here. Yes, it’s imperative for the seekers to honour those who share the platform with Lord.

LET LAWS BE NOT MISUSED

ARVIND K.PANDEY

It's hard to believe that laws meant to protect the interests of women have turned into most potent weapon to settle scores . What could be peacfully settled within the four walls of home turns into a criminal case , notoriously engineered by the relatives of wife . One shudders to think about the plight of elderly couples , who find themselves behind the bars for no fault of theirs . Considering the snail's pace with which legal proceedings take place in India , the aged parents remain trapped in nightmarish happenings for a long time . It's not without a reason that the Supreme court has taken a tough stand against people misusing SC/St Act and Dowry Act .However , we need to take additional steps to prevent the harassment of innocent people . There should be a wing to check the authenticity of the complaints at the time of registering the report and only after the verification further steps should be taken . Anyway , there is urgent neeed to take note of the existing loopholes in the Dowry Act to make it more effective .

The Tata Group has finally managed to take its most ambitious project to its logical culmination , bringing before the world $ 2,500 car " Nano " in all its grandeur . Certainly , it would be now easier for the middle class people to fulfil the cherish dream of owning a car . However , there are some grave implications , which cannot be ignored . Apart from unfortunate series of incidents that hit Singur , the poor roads and ever-increasing cases of rad rage would make the life hellish for the commuters especially the pedestrians and bicycle users . The Tata Group might boast of its fuel-efficiency but it's a harsh reality that huge consumption of petrol would only deepen the crisis of oil with mounting debt on the country caused by the huge imports of oil .Again , are we in a position to ignore our contribution of the carbon-emission ? More cars mean more carbon emission . Against the scenario , whererin developed nations are continuously screwing us , how do we plan to reduce the carbon-emission when we have provided the huge middle class a perfect route to own a car ? Perhaps instead of providing wings to common man's greed , it would be much better to provide them living standards not marred by lack of basic amenities .What prevents the corporate giants and government to start a joint initiative to provide us better roads , pure water , sound education and quality health facilities , to name a few ? Lastly , owning a bicycle than a car would please the Mother Earth more !!

NAXALISM : DEVOID OF PURPOSE

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in DOWN TO EARTH, FEB.15,2008)

It's indeed tragic that Naxalism which started to provide underprivilged a dgnified place in society has turned into biggest threat for internal security . All because its leaders have taken strange U-turns on par with their interests , shearing Naxalism of its real purpose .Worse, dilly-dallying on the part of Central government has allowed the Naxalites to spread their roots in newer zones . At the same time , they appear to be hand-in-glove with anti-national elements in regions close to Nepal border .Ironically , Shivaraj Patil seems to be trapped in labyrinthine political solutions instead of taking strong measures to curb their growth . A movement born out of deprivations has today , in the eyes of Communists , turned in law and order problem . Anyway , a wide spectrum of strategies need to to be taken into consideration to wipe out Naxalites .

PLAYING WITH THE MODESTY OF WOMEN

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in TEHELKA , FEBRUARY 16,2008 )

The growing incidents of rape , molestation and domestic violence have made the women victim of insecurity phobia . Their perennial encounters with leechers and perverts have brought them into realm of pshycological disorders . The beastly behaviour of the mob , which pounced upon the helpless womenin Mumbai is enough to wipe out our image as a civilised nation . What's the point in boasting of our growth-story if it hasn't taught us to respect the modesty of women ? It's really shameful that Mumbaikars preferred to be the mere onlookers instead of preventing the women from the clutches of the mob . Sometimes back the Reader's Digest survey has termed the Mumbaikars " rude " , which has led to furious backlash on their part . The incident puts a seal of approval on the findings of the magazine . Unless we stop treating women as sex objects , it would be really very difficult to prevent such happenings . Ironically , Lalu's sons involvement in the alleged alleged eve-teasing of some women in New Delhi makes it clear that it's not only men belonging to the lower strata of society who are involved in indecent behaviour but people belonging to elite class are greater culprits . In nutshell , it's imperative to change the mindset of men towards women to keep their dignity and self-respect intact .

KOLKATA FIRE

ARVIND K.PANDEY

The never-ending inferno in Burrabazar of Kolkata brings to the fore the lack of administrative acumen in the West Bengal officials , who failed to come up with turnaround strategy to control the fire .Above all, it once again illustrates the harsh truth that we are not interested in learning lessons . Not a long time back the fire , which engulfed the Book Fair in Calcutta had revealed the loopholes in the preventive measures to control fire . However, the officials preferred to ignore the need to take urgent steps to work upon the weak points .Ironically , it was the government which allowed the builders to come up with buildings in Burrabazar devoid of adequate means to curb fire , which , in fact , the general trend pattern in the whole country . Even the businessmen are to be blamed , who are little interested in installling fire-controlling eqipments or , for that matter , making way for water-tanks in vicinity of their shops . Each little inch of land buzzes with commercial activities . Such greed with little regard for life-saving measures is bound to result in tragedies of intense nature .

WHY WE LOVE MORALS ?

ARVIND K.PANDEY

It appears that our genetic set-up is responsible for making human beings stray into moral zones of human behaviour . This when gets combined with external influences leads to formation of our character or personality . However , the modern science is still in dark over the factors which make one inclined towards good or bad actions . How come twins or , for that matter , children belonging to the same family almost follow a different line of action with different set of moral beliefs and ideas ? One can also ask the modern scientist/biologists why the son of thief does not necessarily turn into thief ? There is always a possibilty of his turning into a preacher as well apart from many other possibilties . Here I need to throw light on the Hindu scriptures , which state that it's the " Samskaras " which determine the course of human destiny . These " Samskaras " are formed by our past actions in our previous births . In brief , our sense of morality is dictated by our Karmas(actions) in the previous births , something clearly reflected in the planetary postions in his/her astrological birth-charts .

I totally agree with the observations of the Mathew Thomas that those who are advocating the need of nuclear power didn't bother to ponder over dangerous implications inherent in the deal . Yes ,one wants to know from the nuclear scientists does India have perfect solid waste management schemes ? If not , then why the policy makers are putting millions of Indians open to Chernobyl type incident ? It's really tragic that in made rush to cash the patriotic zeal , the half-truths and lies become the fate of people wishing to know the truth . But the so-called destiny-makers of the nation ,make all arrrangements to keep us in dark forever . One shudders to think of the consequences of permanent existence of radiation in the air . Well, it's time to rethink over the arrival of nuclear power in India .
