KILLING CHILD LABOUR

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS INDIA , JAN.27,2008)

Whether or not GAP is guilty of blocking the sales of Indian garments in the European market , it's a harsh truth that the child labour is still rampant in our country . You can't accuse a developed country of resorting to " non-tariff barriers " when glaring examples of violation of regulations , banning employment of anyone below 14 years of age are common sight in India . Anyone could easily spot children below 14 working in dhabas , small-scale industries and homes . Against this scenario , it becomes imperative for the Indian government to take these allegations seriously , making way for better implementation of domestic laws . It's no secret that violation of international standards is a very common phenomenon in handmade carpet industry , apparel sector and other industries in many parts of India . The government needs to act tough to save the exports from falling to all time low besides securing a better future for children .

Child labour is a big problem and is basically slavery in my opinion. If the people of the world would boycott places like GAP and H&M it would do alot of good and I believe send a strong message that it is not acceptable. Unfortunately for most people the temptation of cheap fashionable clothes is too much.

Dear neonmeatdreams ,

Many thanks for your insightful remark . In this age of commersialization who cares for ethical values ? Even today I see young children working at small hotels even after the exsistence of Child Labour Act .

Yours ,
