LOVE LEADS TO MURDER TODAY

Contrary to the elevated position of love in the Indian literature , a crude and vulgar form of love has pervaded the Indian society .Thanks to the rise of " Me-Mine " generation , it has attained a blatantly dangerous form , being now amalgam of superficial emotions . It's really shocking how can broad daylight murders can take place in its name . Allahabad and other cities have recently witnessed number of incidents , wherein misguided youths have shot dead their so-called soulmates simply because they refused to give in to their misplaced wishes . Ironically , you could have spotted these same fellows making tall claims about purity and sincerity of their love to the same ladies a day before !! In other cases , you find boys making lives of college/school going girls turn nightmarish by stalking them at odd hours .They even dare to slap the girls on the busy streets with onlookers remaining onlookers .

Well, this tamasha is never going to stpop .However , such maniacal lovers need to be severely punished to provide a breather to young girls .

BRITISH PM VISITS INDIA

Gordon Brown's offer to the Indian Prime minister to join hands with him in wiping out terrorism sounds great . Only such collective effort would end the dominance of dangerous minds . Such an initiative has become need of the hour in the wake of rise of Islamic raicals in both India and Britain .

IT HAPPENS ONLY IN INDIA

If men and women can walk the ramp , the people of Basavanagudi near Bangalore thought their cattle too could .So they adorned their bulls and cows with jewellery and ribbons of all colours , and paraded them in the neighbourhood . Forty cattle models participated in the " fashion show " at the Sakranti celebrations .And the winners were Satyabhama and Krishna , a cow and bull dressed as bride and groom .

REMEMBERING GANDHI

Yesterday belonged to the Gandhi's death anniversary . Once again the routine speeches on the relevance of Gandhism were delivered by the psuedo-intellectuals . The world getting more and more inclined towards commercialisation and violent means of attaining the goal has almost brought words of wisdom on the verge of total collapse .Their downfall is not going to stop from such cosmetic events organised at birth and death anniversaries .We need to go beyond the obvious to bring a real change in the society .

HOLLYWOOD'S NEW FOUND LOVE FOR BOLLYWOOD

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS ECONOMICS , JAN.31,2008 )

True , the Holywood has arrived in India to catapult its material dreams to greater heights . One cannot ignore the fact that Hollywood producers would focus more on formulaic movies , something stated by Vishal Bharadwaj , than making movies having out-of-the-box themes . Unless our producers and directors exhibit guts to compel them to change their line of thinking ,it would be a tough nut to crack as far as arrival of better work culture is concerned .Thanks to the rise of likes of Ronnie Screwvala , the Bollywood is fast-learning to respect value-based work culture . It's no secret that Bollywood has been held hostage to unethical practises besides marred by financial irregularities .It's heartening to know that he is determined to improve the face of Global Indian Entertainment Company by roping in larger-than-life projects at par with global practises . It remains to be seen to what extent does " The Happening " manage to add new dimension in Ronnie's dreams .

Lastly , the crime branch needs to act tough to end the unholy nexus between Bollywood and underworld . It's a sad reality that nearly all the big names in movie world are enjoying dubious relationship with the " Bhais " .

KILLING CHILD LABOUR

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS INDIA , JAN.27,2008)

Whether or not GAP is guilty of blocking the sales of Indian garments in the European market , it's a harsh truth that the child labour is still rampant in our country . You can't accuse a developed country of resorting to " non-tariff barriers " when glaring examples of violation of regulations , banning employment of anyone below 14 years of age are common sight in India . Anyone could easily spot children below 14 working in dhabas , small-scale industries and homes . Against this scenario , it becomes imperative for the Indian government to take these allegations seriously , making way for better implementation of domestic laws . It's no secret that violation of international standards is a very common phenomenon in handmade carpet industry , apparel sector and other industries in many parts of India . The government needs to act tough to save the exports from falling to all time low besides securing a better future for children .

being on road less-travelled , often get marginalised in glamorousworld of Bolywood. The fate of such unique artists is to remain unsung

WOMEN ARE MORE VILE AND CORRUPT THAN MEN

A.C.JANA

( This letter by Jana has appeared in the THE WEEK's , Jan 27, 2008 edition )

I respect Shobhaa De for her analytical power and bold views .But I was dissapointed to read the column " M-i-Is escape grind " (Jan.06, 08 ) .It shows her prejudiced and short-sighted views on a social issue . She seems disappointed with mothers-in-law escaping the grind . Her sympathy for the daughters-in -law is commendable , but she forgets that old women also deserve consideration . Under the shield of of anti-dowry laws , the family members of the husband are tortured . A complaint by a woman can make life miserable for her-in-laws' family . It is a tragedy that the onus of proving ' not guilty ' is always on the husband's family . Educated women drag their men and in-laws to the police just to settle scores . People think that the husbands and their families are at fault . Has De cared to find out how many young boys have courted death to escape scheming girls ?
A few months back , some engineers , IITians and MBA professionals undertook a dharna here to protest against the abuse of the law by women . Now some courts are giving directions to verify complaints .Some dowry cases were dismissed as they were fabricated .
My daughter -in -law had filed complaints against me , my wife and son . My son died in an accident as he was under stress .We had to make rounds of the crime cell, where they treated us like criminals . The magistrate court later dismissed the case .It is unfortunate that we plead for young girls at the cost of of old women .

AL GORE : THE GREEN CRUSADER

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Al Gore desrves kudos for his revoultionary and out-of-the-box ways and means to tackle the problem , pertaining to the environment .We need more souls like him to save the planet from turning into clicking time-bomb . It's another thing that his perceptions have not yielded the type of result one expected from them -thanks to ignorance about significance of his vision and ideas among the generality . Though he believes that a " shift in consciousness " is required to bring real changes , it's easier said than done . In our world when more and more people are gettinng in tune with absurd American beliefs , promoting recklessness and zero-tolerance towards values , it would be one of the most difficult tasks to promote fair principles . True , technology alone cannot reverse the damage but Gore's this particular view seems to be meaningless and impractical in view of the man's deep bond with gadgets akin to inhalation / exhalation . However , let's respect the man for displaying tremendous enthusisam , even though pitched against oddities , in making world a better place for the future generations .

SUBHASH CHANDRA BOSE : TRUE SON OF THE SOIL

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Today we are celebrating his birth anniversary )

Subhash Chandra Bose was a leader-with-a-difference .He was a true son of the soil, whose only aim was to liberate her motherland from the clutches of the Britishers . He was an innovative and original thinker and as it always happens such a fire-brand revoltionary gets little support from the great leaders of his times .Though he failed to see outcome of his efforts ,it's no secret that his armed measures played a great role in in uprooting the regime of the Britishers . He reminds of the great truth that there are many ways to achieve your end .Sometimes it's strange and weird , sometimes it's a socially accepted route . The souls like Bose and Bhagat Singh choose the former often at the cost of their total marginalisation .

BENAZIR ASSASSINATED

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in THE WEEK , January 27,2008 )

The assassination of Benazir has shattered the hopes of arrival of democracy in Pakistan . Ironically , her worst fear that she could be eliminated at the hands of terrorists turned out to be true within no time . It's shocking that adequate security arrangements were always missing in her rallies even as the possibility of a terrorist attack loomed large over head . The brutal death of Benazir once again brings to the fore the harsh reality that in Pakistan the hard-liners are the real controller of everything happening in Pakistan . Anybody who dares to challenge their supremacy is bound to meet a deadly fate . Needless to state , Military is hand-in-glove with radical gropus , who are not interested in installation of democracy in Pakistan . Today , Pakistan has turned into emblem of insecurity and unstability , with Military-Mullah axis becoming stronger with each passing day . Musharraf , the picture of pity and helpnessness , can't do much other than making false promises of total elimination of terrorism . Even Mr. Bush , more or less , feels safe in remaining blissfully ignorant about what's actually taking place in Pakistan . Ultimately , the burden to usher in real changes has fallen upon the shoulders of the people of Pakistan , who are , at present , shell-shocked and totally confused .

TRAGEDY OF ERRORS IN SYDNEY TEST

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in THE SUNDAY INDIAN,JAN.21-JAN.27,08)

One is aghast over the Australian team's display of pig-headed mannerism , which coupled with the selective honesty of the umpires ruined the chances of the Indian team to save the match . The halo is slipping fast for the Australian team , which has once again proved that it can bid adieu to principled approach in order to register a win even as it pride itself on enjoying a World champion status unchallenged for a long time ! It's shameful that Michael Hussey , who glanced a ball into the gloves of Dhoni didn't show the courage to leave the crease and Michael Clarke dared to remain on the crease despite being given out by the umpire . Against this scenario, it's highly ironical that Mark Benson found it safe to rely on the version of Ponting to declare Ganguly out . What prevented Benson from referring it to the TV umpire ? Or , for that matter , what compelled Steve Bucknor to give Symonds not out when he was plumb LBW , preventing Kumble from making a hat-trick ? Sadly , the same bunch of umpires displayed a high level of urgency in declaring Dhoni and R.P. Singh LBW when there was enough scope to give them benefit of doubt . It's time for the the BCCI to register a strong protest against umpires for their inability to give right decisions .

STRANGE NUCLEAR DEAL

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in INDIA TODAY , JAN.28,08 )

The deal-making exercise revealed its new shades when the Communist Party and the Congress entered into hypocritical confrontations over the Indo-US nuclear deal . Considering the see-saw nature of the talks between both the parties , it became crystal clear that they are guided more by their hidden interests than successful execution of the deal . Worse , the contradictory opinions of the leading nuclear scientists over the implication of the deal have addede fuel to the fire . It's really unfortunate that our policy makers are never interested in revealing various aspects of the deals in totality to the concerned citizens . Had it bothered to maintain transperency , the confusion and blockades would not have entered into the nuclear deal .

NAUSHAD :A MUSICAL GENIUS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in CITY CHEERS , JANUARY ,2008)

The death of Naushad has created an eternal void in the field of music . Right from Ratan , his first musical blockbuster , to Taj Mahal he remained at the top , being creator of unforgettable movie songs . He was a perfectionist ,who believed that right blend of classical music with moving verse in sync with the theme depicted in the movie was the only way to churn out haunting melodies . Precisely , this is why he just worked for 67 movies in his 66 years devoted to the movie world . He served as a mentor to singers like Uma Devi besides compelling big names , belonging to Indian classical music , like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan to sing for movies . It was under his direction that K.L. Saigal sang for last time in movie in Shajahan , providing the listeners immortal numbers Jab dil hi toot gaya and Gham Diye Mustaquil . Both Majrooh's and Shakeel's couplets became the movie lovers prize possession once Naushad set them into haunting tunes .His Mela number seems to be the fittest tribute to his rich musical legacy :Ye zindagi ke mele kam na honge ,afsoos hum na honge .

REVEALING THE SUPREMACY OF HINDUISM

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Right from the beginning of civilsation on this planet , the Indian sages have hailed God to be " all-pervasive " and " eternal " . Both the Vedas and Upanishads state the fact that ' our universe is nothing but manifestation of Brahman " . Probably , this is why Hindus bond with secular beliefs is ancient and natural . In fact , Amartya Sen believes that " argumentative tradition " has been the integral part of the Indian society since time immemorial . No wonder why this land has been the birth place of so many religions , laying emphasis on differen thoughts patterns . No other religion than the Hindu religion provides total freedom to its followers a total freedom to challenge the supremacy of Lord , which has led to existence of numerous philosophical interpretations from various angles and vision . Or else , Carvakas would not have attained a dignified place in the Hindu way of living .

PRESERVING THE MANUSCRIPTS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Our ancient manuscripts are relics of our glorious past . Therefore, it becomes imperative for us to honour and preserve them with the help of technology .There is urgent need to convert them into digital format besides having special museums to ensure their longetivity . However , lack of funds has come in the way of creation of state-of-the-art museums . Also , lack of awareness among the manuscript preservers in librararies and other places have exposed the manuscripts to the harshness of nature . We should take a cue from from the Western countries , which have left no stone unturned in saving the classics for the posterity . In India , too, similar steps need to be taken to not only protect them but also highlight their content to modern generation . The perceptions inherent in it should become part and parcel of our lives to make the whole process of saving them more meaningful .

The top brass of leaders in India , who are engaged in petty politics should take note of Hindus living dog's life in Malaysia .The " Bhumiputras " there have ensured that the Hindus remain marginalised and cut-off from the premier instituions . MESSAGES OF SWAMI VIVEKANANDA

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(TODAY WE ARE CELEBRATING SWAMI VIVEKANANDA'S BIRTH ANNIVERSARY )

*************

DIFFICULT TO STRIKE A BALANCE

No one ever succeeded in keeping society in good humour and at the same time did great works . One must work as the dictate comes from within , and then if it is right and good , society is bound to veer round , perhaps centuries after one is dead and gone . We must plunge heart and soul and body into the work . And until we be ready to sacrifice everything else to one Idea and to one alone , we never , never will see the light .

**************

EVEN SMALL ACTS SERVE THE PURPOSE

Even the greatest fool can accomplish a task if it be after his heart . But the intelligent man is he who can convert every work into one that suits his taste . No work is petty . Everything in this world is like a banyan-seed , which , though appearing tiny as mustard-seed , has yet the gigantic banyan tree latent within it . He indeed is intelligent who notices this and succeeds in making all work truly great .

***********

BE THE GIVER

In this world always take the poisition of the giver . Give everything and look for no return . Give love , give help , give service , give any little thing you can , but keep out barter . Make no conditions and none will be imposed . Let us give out of our own bounty , just as God gives to us . The Lord is the only Giver , all the world are only shopkeepers . Get His cheque and it must be honoured everywhere .

MAKING OF THE SUICIDE BOMBERS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in THE SUNDAY INDIAN , (JAN.14-JAN.20,08)

Brig S.K. Chatterji has rightly pointed out that abject poverty , racial discrimination and ideological bigotry , to name a few , are some of the key reasons for a person to turn into a suicide bomber . However , Chatterji's argument is mired in a serious logical flaw . Why don't other people , for example Dalit Hindus placed in the similar conditions , don't end up as suicide bombers ? Why the suicide bombers emanate from the Muslim class or , for that matter , rise from radical groups like LTTE ? According to reports , specially trained suicide bombers in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan have been sent to Iraq to give a fitting reply to to the American trooops . Needless to state , these jehadi operatives , who are guided by percepts imbibed in the Madarassas are carrying out the task of Allah -elimination of the Kafirs to save Islam from extinction . Such dangerous brainwashing is the root cause of high number of suicide bombers in the Muslim commnunity . It's necessary to wipe out the " illusory fears " , which are being perceived as threat to the extension of Islam besides sabotaging the attempts of the bombers to highlight their political message via lethal attacks . An ' all-inclusive ' society would definitely lead to better days .

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published In DOWN TO EARTH , JAN.15,2008)

The power manufacturing plants , using traditional sources , need to be replaced by alternate sources of energy . One should realize that by spending huge money to reduce the carbon-emission isn't the right way to tackle the problems triggerd by the global warming . Only by giving way to non-traditional means of generating energy like the one deviced by Tulsi Tanti is going to save the world from ill-effects of global warming .His wind -turbine generators ,using wind , not only produces power in a cheaper way but also devoid of carbon-emission . Well, these might be useful tools for Americans and other nations , across the globe , which have the habit of consuming power in mindless manner . The wind-turbine maker Tulsi Tanti needs to be honoured for pulling the earth away from the cluthches of global warming , at prersent , facing numerous problems unleashed by the greedy and over-ambitious Americans .Surely , the wind-turbine generators would change the world in a big way, providing a healthier and safer world for coming generations .

ABANDONED CHILDREN : GETTING LOVE AND CARE

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in DASH , JANUARY , 2008)

The institutions like Udayan and Pratham are working seriously and sincerely for the cause of children . The children full of vigour , confidence and dreams are capable of changing the course of society as well as nation in a big way . However , destiny takes cruel turns for many children , tuning them into suppressed and depressed souls . Often in absence of better guidance at critical junctures , they turn into anti-social elements . It's heartening to know that Udayan is helping abandoned children to re-gain their self-esteem by making them aware of their worth . Needless to say , timely interventions in lives of such children can provide better future to their hidden potential . Or else , children with immense rocking possibilties are most likely to embrace deviant behaviour . Let's channellize their potential in a better way to turn them into souls in league with infinite capabilities .

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Thanks to the persistent efforts of NGO Wildlife Protection Society of India ( WPSI) , the most wanted poacher Shabbir Hasan Qureshi is now behid the bars . But we need not to be too elated over the arrest of kingpin of trade in tiger parts . The seizure of big cat skins is indicative of the fact that poachers are conducting their business smoothly with the help of localites and corrupt forest officials in the states like Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh . True , we need to make " wildlife crime a priority " to save the tigers from becoming things of the past . It's really pathetic that police is not able to sabotage the well-orgainsed network of poachers , buyers and couriers . Yes , it has become the need of the hour to to wipe out the influence of paoching mafia to provide big cats a breather .

ARVIND K .PANDEY

True, it's mind which makes or mar the man's progress . It's very necessary to rule over mind to lead a balanced life . However , the agents of globalisation have increased the woes of prersent age generation .They have made materialistic preferences part and parcel of our lives . As a result of this forced choices , triggered by aggressive advertising , we have become more greedy and self-centred . When these created needs are not fulfiled we become depressed . In other words , the superficialities , which have creeped into our lives , have made us prone to mood swings of negative types . To avoid brush with bipolar diseases , it's imperative that we are not lured by illusionary goals . Let's have healthy expectations , supported by the value-based beliefs , to rise above encounters with depression !!!
