PRIYANKA'S MEOW

ARVIND K.PANDEY

NEWSPAPER RUN BY SEMI-LITERATE WOMEN

The semi-literate group of women in Bundelkhand is today a force to reckon with . These women have managed to run a Bundelkhandi newspaper Khabar Laharia , to provide a voice to the weaker section of society . The newspaper is making waves in the region . It's worthwhile as well as surprising since none of them have even an iota of knowledge about the trend patterns and intricacies associated with journalism , forget about having a degree in journalism from a premier institute . Their success story is indicative of fact that it's spirit and not degree which places one on the road to achievement .

PRIYANKA : Either the journalists are running after movie stars or are too eager to share the platform with neta ...MEOW..MEOW

SENSEX MAN

I found the photograph you showed of Shahrukh Khan in the story, Ab-solutely Shahrukh (Oct 22), nauseating. It was disgusting to see the torso of a cine actor look more like that of a rickshaw-wallah—one that’s moulded more by starvation that by sessions at the gym. It’s nothing except luck that is making srk big. We have had such stars in the past as well—Rajendra Kumar, Jeetendra and Asha Parekh to mention a few. Today they are all forgotten. Like them, some ten years from now, srk too will be consigned to the dustbin of Bollywood history.

NO TRACE OF LOVE BIRD

Tommy , Kaluy , Moti and Sheru are most dissapointed figures today . Once they overheard this casual remark from a dirty outspoken doggie that " Pyar Naam Ki Chidiya Is Jamanein Se Phurra Ho Gayein Hai ." .The remark infuriated them , leading to a furious hunt for the bird representing true love . Now after so many years , having travelled in so many countries with a net bought with borrowed money , they have given up . Their net is now being given new shape by the rats .

MORAL OF THE STORY :

True love no more exists in this world . Love is now amalgam of carnal instincts and money

(Published in THE TELEGRAPH , NOV.29, 2007)

The serial blasts in various District courts are indicative of growing influence of Islamic militants in the nation . They are attacking the key instituitions of country , one after another , managing to dodge intelligence agencies with the help of well-established network . Though Shivaraj Patil has accepted that terrorists have managed to create new centres of terror in lesser known places of India , he has failed to come out with effective plan for their total elimination . It appears that Muslim vote-bank has limited the Home Minister to mere face-saving gestures . There are reports that both Centre and State have entered in war of words over allleged failure of Intelligence agencies . Perhaps they are not interested in preventing the country from turning into playground of terrorists . After all , what has prevented the UPA government from having tough laws to curb their growth ?

SAVING HEART FROM STINTS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

It is alarming that stints, found medically unsafe , are being installed in the heart patients more frequentely than ever . Going by the latest findings , the stints offer no additional advantages than people dependant on medicines for opening the blockages in the heart veins .It's learnt that these drug-coated stints are not effective in people having minor blockages or , for that matter , exhibiting lesser symptoms . So ,at present , there appears to be plenty of reasons to rely on ' cocktail of medicines ' to get rid of blockages . One almost wishes that world should be driven by 'humane factors ' than by ' material equations ' . However , the world in which we live is fast-turning into home of people governed by greed than noble values .Well, one expects white angels to remain above ulterior motives , being in tune with safer and better alternatives .

Well, it appears that M.Karunanidhi is hell-bent to create fisssures in the Tamil society . It's one thing to restore " Dravidian beliefs " but ,it's quite another, to spew venom in its name . In fact , his knowledge of the ancient scriptures is superficial and sketchy . Instead of delivering outrageous statements against the protagonists of the Valmiki Ramayan , it's time for him to heed to the demands of people , opposing the construction of the Ram Sethu .What's the point in trampling the " self-respect " of people willing to go to any extent to preserve our ancient legacy ?

EMERGENCY IN PAKISTAN

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in INDIA TODAY , DEC.03,2007)

The declaration of emergency just goes to show that Musharraff can go to any extent to remain numero uno in the political upmanship . Pakistan , at present , is in the most fitting position to embrace a stable democratic government .However , dictators are rarely interested in extinguishing the lust for power . His crossing of swords with the Supreme Court is bound to push the Pakistan towards total breakdown of Constituional machinery . Ironically , people hoping for arrival of democracy ,would have suffered a heavy setback. It appears that powerful dictators with the help of army can very easily trample the dignity of democratic instituions in Pakistan . It's time for the public and leaders , supporting the cause of democracy , to show the door to Musharraf and extremists .

No doubt , what happened in Gujarat in 2002 needs to be condemned in strong words .But the never- ending politicization of the Gujarat riots does not augur well for the future of Gujarat .The Tehelka would serve the cause of journalism better if it dares to dedicate special issues to more burning issues like menace of Naxalism or , for that matter, growth of Islamic radicals in India and across the globe .

The High Court verdict in the Rijwanur case would definitely bring the skeletons out of the closet .It is unfortunate that the West Bengal government acted in high-handed manner instead of taking steps to set things in order in the alleged murder of Rizwanur . It's strange that the party ,which loves to harp on good governence acted in most insensitive manner .It was public's anger , which compelled the goverment to take some face-saving gestures . SAVING TIGERS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in NEWSWEEK, NOV.19,2007)

Interestingly , Eric Dinerstein , the Chief scientist working with WWF, sounds similar to the Pakistani tiger expert Norman F Kadir who says that " issues related to poaching , prey depletion and habitat loss should not be seen in isolation ." Though legal market for tiger parts might rescue the big cat from grip of poachers , the real way to ensure their presence would be the total elimination of poachers and creation of sound habitat .

Anyway , what's happening in Gir Forest should be an eye-opener for lovers of big cats . The widely known yet systematically evaded harsh truth about poachers growing influence has finally come out in the light with brutal elimination of Asiatic lions in Gir forest .It can be safely stated that forest officials comprimising on the competence enabled the poachers to bring the lions on the brink of extinction .Well, all animals lovers and NGOs dedicated to the cause of animals need to shatter the prejudices of government officials , forcing them to check the menace of human predators .No doubt the " collective will " of dedicated individuals would alone provide a sigh of relief to the king of jungle.

ARVIND K.PANDEY

The third National Family Health Survey (NFHS-3) brings out in open the bitter truth that despite living in ultra-modern society , there are gaps in our initiatives aimed at bringing umderprivilged within the realm quality health services . Apart from lack of awareness about the government programmes , meant to curnb serious diseases llike Polio and AIDS, the people living in remote areas have to suffer due to non-existence of health centres . Moreover , there is no proper methadology to tackle the critical issues , pertaining to the health sector . It's also shocking that " preference for son " still dominates families across the country . There needs to be change in midset to bring an end to this attitude .

WAITING FOR REAL LEADERS

ARVIND K. PANDEY

(Published in DASH , NOVEMBER, 2007)

Leaders of the earlier times possessed a deep understanding of human affairs and were devoted to their causes .Moreover they were people of character. Thus they were able to speak in a way that touched people. Today's leaders are neither well-read nor do they have an inspiring persona .No wonder why their words are erased from our consciousness in no time.

The prospectiveless present of the current lot of the GenNext leaders is borne out of their bankruptcy in terms of vision and ideology .Their dangerous liasons with old lifestyles and roadblocks set by the sharks of the political arena were enough to turn them into plastic creatures . Probably , it's very difficult for fresh minds to create new paradigms in a democratic set-up governed by worn-out minds . Had they not maintained a safe distance from the ground realities , the picture would have been different for them . However , the moot question is whether they have to become expert in playing dirty games , like their predecessors ,to ensure their political survival ? The cruel irony involved in the whole process is that their bond with idealism provides the political analysts and distorted minds a chance to label these young leaders as novice , in turn , leading to their marginalisation !

DON'T DEMOLISH RAM SETHU

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS ECONOMICS , NOV.15,2007)

This has reference to your article "Sethusamudram:Billions down the drain ? " (Oct.15,07).The government's affidavit , filed by the Archaeological Survey Of India (ASI), has kept the nation on tenterhooks . Such a prejudiced observation is indicative of the intellectual bankruptcy of the caretakers of this nation . The demand of " incontrovertible proof " to confirm the existence of Lord Ram not only makes mockery of the Hindu senntiments but also bring in light the so-called secular brigade's half-baked understanding of the concept of religion . The matters of faith have always been governed by attributes falling beyond the ambvit of human understanding .Going by the stand of government, the enlightenment of Buddha, the Prophethood of Mohammed , the resurrection of of Christ and other divine phenomenons , resting on the pedestal of indefensible and mysterious factors , are all bogus happenings . The government's stand also undermines Gandhi's supreme association with Lord Ram .Ironically , Gandhi stated that Lord is unseen power ' which makes itself feel and yet defies all proof because it is so unlike all that I perceive from my senses . It is not proved by any extraneous substance.'Lastly , what's the need to go ahead with Sethusamudram project when it's threatening for the marine ecology and absence of Ram Setu could magnify the intensity of Tsunami ?

In fact , it has become order of the day , all under the veneer of so-called secular values , to assault the attributes of Hinduism .Over the years , minorityism has sown seeds of frustration and divisiveness among the Hindu groups , struggling hard to uphold the tenets of Hinduism against all odds . Perhaps it is for all these reasons Hindu organisations , symbols and sentiments , associated with Hinduism , are being needlessly targeted .On the other hand , Muslim fundamentalists have been given free hand to execute their nefarious designs since it ensures a strong vote-bank . It appears to be a macabre temptation when it comes to question the intentions and means of Muslim organisations .At the other end of spectrum , the nude pictures of Hindu gods and goddesses are treated as extension of creative freedom ,the demand for substantial proof of Lord Ram's existence is projected as scientific temper and well-planned destruction of Hindu beliefs as an attempt to move with the times ! The double standards , prevailing in the name of secularism , need to be curbed to prevent mockery of the Hindu ideals .

PAKISTAN :VIRTUALLY RULED BY TERRORISTS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in INDIA TODAY , NOV.19,2007)

Pakistan has turned into safe hiding place for the most-wanted terrorists of the world .Considering the bomb blasts which brutally greeted the arrival of Benazir , it can be stated , without a trace of doubt, that Pakistan's administration has fallen in the wrong hands . Indeed , the nuclear potential of Pakistan faces the risk of being misused once the negative forces come in operation in Pakistan . It's strange that being an active partner in the war-on-terror has not been able to prevent the expansion of potentially destructive minds . Interstingly , even the U.S.adhered to wait and watch policy towards the dangereous developments in Pakistan in recent years . Had Pakistan and America joined hands for their total elimination , the areas close to Afghanistan or , for that matter , unpredicatable tribal chiefs would not have become cause of worry for the total world .One wonders whether the arrival of so-called democratic government in Pakistan would be capable enough to wage a war against them !!

The " food riots " in West Bengal are indicative of the fact that governance has gone to the dogs there ! One cannot believe that such incidents can occur in India, firmly placed on the road to growth . What's more ,they have hit the state ruled by people , who boast of working for the cause of downtroddens .The diabolical miondset of the Communists has prevented them from framing people-friendly policies at par with the times .No wonder why Public Distribution System (PDS)in West Bengal have turned into white-elephants , serving the interests of greedy Comrades .Against this backdrop , there is need to not only punish the culprits but also give rise to corruption-free distribution centres . It needs to be stated that it's not the shortage of grains but poor distribution mechanism , which has brought the poor people on verge of starvation .

The revelations of Aijaz Gul are interesting and informative . Noorjehan was , indeed, the ideal example of composite culture , which flourished in the pre-partition days . She was the owner of voice sweeter than honey , which provided a glimpse of her pure heart . Her legendary renderings in Anmol Ghari , Bari Maa and Jugno , to name a few , made her darling of both the Indians and Pakistanis . Though she had attained starry heights , she remained down -to-earth all through her life . Needless to state , her evergreen songs never let her presence fade-out from our memories .

JUDICIARY : A GREAT LEVELLER AFTER DEATH

ARVINd K.PANDEY

The Telegraph rightly states that sometimes " justice denied is not always justice denied " .One cannot ignore the fact that judiciary is trying its best to give the impressions that law's arms , sooner or later , does reach to the people , harbouring illusion that they are above law . One should also sit up and take notice of the fact that despite infrastructural problems , shoratages of judges and non-cooperative investigative agencies , the judiciary is coming up with path-breaking judgements .Contrary to to the people's expectations , the life imprisonment to Amarmani Tripathi would definitely improve the image of judiciary among the ordinary citizens , who have always witnessed big fishes managing to escape the net . No doubt , the judiciary has still to do a lot of work to erase the black dots but this not appear to be a distant dream .It can be safely stated that its fast-turning out to be great leveller after death .

LOSING WEIGHT WITHOUT BEING EMBARRASSED

ARVIND K.PANDEY

The problem of obesity has made life hellish for children worldwide .On top of it , the lack of proper relationship between the doctor and patient , in the course of its treatment , has made the situation worse . It's really surprising that doctors prefer to be tight-lipped regarding the actualities governing the obesity- related cases . True, the ' harsh truth' would make the patient bit embarrassed but in the long run it's going to make his/her life more healthier .Yes , the doctors should not use time-constraints as a pretext not to strike a rapport with the patients .Considering the fact that obese people are prone to diabetes , heart-attacks and other major diseases , the doctors should always be ready to take an extra step to bring the patients at par with healthy life .

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS SPHERE , NOV.15,2007)

It's really tragic that victims of Mumbai riots were left at the mercy of fate .The verdicts delivered in the cases pertaining to the riots would really bring a sigh of relief on the faces of the sufferers .However , a delayed justice of this type is not sufficient enough to provide solace to the bleeding hearts .It's ironical that media gave way to cynical response to protest against the so-called harsh verdict delivered in the Sanjay Dutt case istead of bringing the impact of judgement on the victims .Though verdict delivered casts a pale of gloom on the faces of film producers , there is no need to shed tears over his fate . Let's remember the fact that he committed a grave blunder by possessing a dangerous weapon and later entered in conspiracy to destroy it in a planned way . An actor of his stature should have thought about consequences of entering into alliance with anti-national elements .I am surprised over media's manical obsession with Sanjay's case , which seems to transmit perception about him as a ' victim of circumstances ' .We need to follow standards set by West , where celebreties are put behind bars without much fuss .It's time for the media to focus on the cause of victims .

KILLLING STRESS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

True, the people of Jammu and Kashmir have been subjected to never-ending horrific episodes for more than two decades . The perrenial saga of viloence has made them prisoners of psychlogical disorders . Apart from cruicial role of NGOs , working -in-tandem wiith qualified psyciatrists , the government needs to raise the income level of people living there .One of the reasons why youths were lured by the ISI agents has been the inabililty of the state government to create job opportunities in the valley . The government needs to enjoy the confidence of people to build the structural support system , who seem to be cut-off from the leaders at helm in the State .The leaders in Jammu Kashmir are more interested in crossing swords with Centre than working in the direction of creating better days for the people.
