CHANGING THE FACE OF POLICE

ARVIND K.PANDEY

It's strange that the Centre is reluctant in honouring the wishes of the Supreme Court ,which is determined to to change the face of Indian police . Needless to state that changes have become must to bridge the gulf between police and people . More so when police has turned into icons of brutality and demonic attributes . What makes the Centre remain indifferent to the pleas of the Supreme Court ? Is the Centre interested in making police slave to its " sharabi-kababi culture " ? Well, time has come to make police accountable to the human rights of ordinary citizens , enabling them to wipe out their image of police as agents of terror from their memories .

(Published in BUSINESS ECONOMICS, MAY 31, 2007)

Considering the fact that policies aimed at large acquisition of lands have been formulated at par with interests of business czars ,the owners of these lands feel betrayed . It's surprising that the UPA government ,supported by the so-called saviours of workers, decided to go ahead with the creation of SEZs weighed heavily in the favour of those who are marred by the ills of suffice . The violent protests in Nandigram should make it clear to everybody ,associated with projects recquiring large possession of land , that owners need to be made part and parcel of such projects .How can their interests be dismissed without making substantial arrangements for their bread and butter ? Also, the government should eye barren lands instead of offering cultivable land to the capitalists .

CHECKING RAGGING

ARVIND K.PANDEY

The Supreme Court's verdict would certainly provide a sigh of relief to the freshers and their parents .It's a harsh reality that menace of ragging has brought an untimely end to the bright prospects of meritorious students , forcing them to either end their lives or turn them into victims of psychlogical disorders .The students who dared to oppose the bullying of seniors met with violent tit-for-tat counter attacks . One hopes that now such infamous episodes in medical and engineering colleges would become a thing of past . In fact , the Supreme Court has ensured measures , which make the trial courts adjudicate ragging cases in expeditious manner . In a more immediate sense , the onus now lies on the college administration to ensure that victims get a fair deal in such incidents if at all it comes to intercept such a case .

TIRED SOLDIERS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Ultimately , the imperialist designs of America are beginning to spell doom for its warriors having sleepless nights in various parts of the world to turn wild dreams into a reality . Worse, the emergence of dangerous forces in Iraq is proving nightmarish for the American soldiers who are unable to check the menace of car bombers . It's time for the American defence officials to be in league with " ground realities " before camouflaging its selfish interests as missions for the sake of humanity .Or else , such vain ambitions could annihilate the well-being of American soldiers , trapping them in virtual death-traps forever.

IGNORING COMMON MAN

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in NEWSWEEK ,MAY 28 , 2007 )

There is merit in Opposition's criticism that Chidambaram has ignored the interests of common man . It appears that in his eyes well-being of cats and dogs is of greater importance than bread and better concerns of an ordinary citizen .It's ironical that no substantial provisions have been made to control the price rise .It's time for him to realize that growth rate of 9% loses significance if it does not ensure a better standard of living for the masses . We want real progress instead of rosy picture expressed in terms of dry facts .

MOVING TOWARDS SAFFRONISATION

ARVIND K.PANDEY

If saffron " is a beautiful colour ,the colour of renunciation ,worn by monks and other of great and good character "( U.R. Anantha Murthy ) then what makes Leftists set roadblocks in the path of saffronisation ? Why they raise hue and cry over attempts of saffronisation ? In fact , the Leftists are guilty of ascribing wrong notions to dreams of saffronisation , being unable to rise above their pevert mindset . It's also necessary to probe the causes which make India's bond with 'iniversal consciousness ' appear very natural , making her to perceive whole world as her family . Honestly speaking , the ideals imparted by our Rishis have become part of our beings ,making it difficult for the Hindus to create complexities in the name of differences . I don't see any harm if certain organisations are working day and night to provide these ideals a dignified space in modern India . If some people are unable to digest the rise of these institutions ,it's because they have never bothered to understand their philosophy and ideas in a right way . Just like our Leftists friends , they are contend with sweeping conclusions about their purpose and beliefs .It's time for them to shatter limitations of their intellect so that they can see through ancient ideas the saffron way !

ARVIND K. PANDEY

The blasts in Hyderabad's Mecca Masjid were surely a treachereous attempt on the part of extremist forces to widen the gulf between the majority and minority . It's a strage coincidence that the blasts took place on day when Mumbai Court began sentencing in Mumbai blasts case . Anyway, the blasts have once again hinted at the growing network of dangerous elements .One hopes that government would take all steps to wipe out home-grown terrorists ,supported by the foreign powers .

FREEDOM OF CHOICE

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Let me say that "freedom of choice" means
nothing for people falling in lower realms of society .It's another weapon in hand of the priviligentisia , who use it often to further sharpen the difference between them and poverty-stricken souls . Long back ago our Rishis had talked about the age in which non-self will rule the roost .Certainly ,the gimmicks of elites confirm the arrival of age in which superficialty be the mantra to survive .Jeremy Seabrook right that wrongs which can be diluted have attianed a fatal permanence .Let's hope Sri Aurobindo's higher souls ,having connection with supramental forces , bring new light in the world in near future .

The reason for increase in cardiac problems, quite simply , is that we have failed to curb lifestyle disorders . Though hospitals having state-of-the- art facilties have enabled the patients to have a new lease of life , the change in attitude towards the changes in modern world is the real way to check the heart related diseases . Let's not ignore the fact that most of the quality hospitals are situated in cities , which has left rural people at the mercy of Lord . It's ime to provide these people ray of hope by establishing quality hospitals in the rural belt , offering services in a cheaper way .

(Published In THE HINDU , MAY 20,2007)

I agree with Shashi Tharoor that lack of resources and poverty-related nightmares are the principle reasons ,which have made mockery of government's effort to provide oxygen to primary education . Worse , increase in population has given birth to new set of complexities .Ironically , the government is more interested in reservation politics in the education field than tackling problems chasing children -the future of nation . Not only the government has to make education a mean to create better job prospects but also ensure that all children turn literate in real sense .

It's ironical that hideouts of al-Qaeda in Somalia have provided US an opportunity to make it target of its air raids .What makes Islamic militants to turn poor countries into abode of evil in the eyes of US ? It's really tragic that US is inventing one pretext after another to trample the sovereignty of even the poorest nation . Only time will tell whether US is able to root out the menace of al-Qaeda in Somalia . But one thing is certain :Somalia is bound to lie in tatters once the war gets over . True , the fate of poor nation is to become poor further .

However , things have taken U-turn in a wrong direction with emergence of distorted relationship with them .The only way to curb such happenings would be to make young minds distinguish between the right and wrong form of touch .The study is ,indeed, a sad commentary on the state of affairs prevalent in our homes , wherein the perverts close proximity with negative currents of time is scripting pages of doom for both boys and girls

CURIOUS WHEAT POLICY

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in BUSINESS INDIA , MAY 20,07)

The wheat policy of the UPA government is marred by curious contradictions .On one hand , it has no time to heed to genuine demands of the wheat producers ,who have to sell their produce via middlemen to elicit better prices . On the other hand , the government is importing wheat at high rates from other countries . This bad economics and worse politics have taken toll on not only wheat production but also worsened the state of affairs of the wheat producers .Surprisingly , the benefits offered to the farmers after lot of hue and cry serves little purpose other than ensuring survival of political creatures . Today , most of the farmers are reeling under problems triggered by lack of irrigation facilties and erratic power supply .At least , the government should not ingnore its moral responsibilty of providing basic facilities to the farmers so that they can hope of better days .

There is no other way to assess the verdict of electorates in recent UP elections other than to fall in the line of above-mentioned adage . Unfortunately , the diabolical caste-based politics , higlighted as social engineering by the poll analysts , has worked wonders for Mayavati . Ironically , the self-proclaimed guardians of Dalits ,the BSP, fought the elections without a formal election manifesto . What's more the upper-class which always remained at the vituperative end of BSP's think-tank has today helped Mayavati to remain in the driver's seat ! TENDULKAR :FAR AWAY FROM TRUTH

ARVIND K.PANDEY

The verbal artillery from Sachin Tendulkar between Tendulkar and Chappell serves no purpose other than placing him in troubled waters . Surely ,even his most ardent admirer would find it difficult to reckon with merit of his argument . Does he want to suggest that Greg Chappell didn't enjoy power to unleash better sense of understanding in the team ? Do seniors enjoy certain priviliges which make them above the diktats of Coach ? Well, Sachin should realise that the Indian team has failed to rise above personal interests . They have taken themselves far too seriously with little regard for the fact that they are represntatives of the aspirations of Indians on the field . Needless to say , the Team India divided into small islands of mutiny has evoked fear , hate and anger in the minds of fans instead of giving rise to waves of sympathy for the players governed by prejudices . It's time to marginalise the players who don't develop the habit of playing for the nation in true professional manner .

Though the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is determined to go ahead with the formation of SEZs , the growing resentment among people is bound to give rise to many Nandigrams . It's unfortunate that fear psychosis is being generated among the farmers , who are not willing to accept cock and bull theory about the benefits of SEZs . First , they are asked to strip off their rights and , on refusal , they find themselves at the receiving end of brutalities of the State machinery including police . Is this the way to tackle grievances of poor people ? Why do the State governments love to crack whip on people , who come to voice their differences in a strong way ? Remember , the killings have taken place in a state governed by the ' champions of poor '. The murder of innocent people has exposed that difference between the Leftists and the agents of globalisation has vanished .You are right there are crocodile's tears from the one's who ,till this very moment, were vociferously championing the cause of capitalists .Unless we wipe out the wolve in the garb of sheep ,it won't be easy to provide better days for the weaker souls .

Karnataka should not further complicate the whole issue by challenging the award in the Supreme Court . THE SOCIOLOGY OF SUICIDE

( Published In BUSINESS ECONOMICS ,MAY 15,2007 )

The irony is that adhering to higher values is viewed as an obstacle in attainment of the cherished dreams. The previous generations were successfully able to rise above the complexities of life because of its deep faith in the religious beliefs. Since this generation has been fed on ‘borrowed ideals’ it has come to imbibe mercurial tendencies, those that often invite unpleasant consequences; to say the least. The worse part of this whole affair is that any attempt of restoration of these age old values comes to be labeled as ‘saffronisation’ by the psuedo -intellectuals who as usual come to resist it. This pathetic situation, invloving the suicides by bright students, which has come to hit metros should be an eye –opener for those who are unable to find any thing worth for emulation in our culture. At least they should now refrain themselves from engaging in mindless criticism. It’s really sad and unfortunate that the deserving souls always find themselves in pool of troubles. Even when India is apparently shining some are compelled ,like the farmers of Vidharba , to end their lives. Let’s hope this government does something to improve their condition.
