CENSORING INFORMATION

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published In BUSINESS INDIA , OCT.08,2006)

Anna Hazare and other crusaders must be appreciated for their tenacity to pursue critical issues with dogged spirit . Surely , the proposed amendmentsin the RTI ,excluding the file notings away from the reach of common people , would help the bureaucrats to engage in dirty tricks without fear of backlash . I don't know what compelled the government to provide lifeline to corrupt officials . Such amendments would not only whitewash the merits of RTI but also reduce the accountability of officials towards the grievances of ordinary people . What's the point in having an act which lacks teeth to punish the offenders ? The government has bowed down to pressure of officials , who have become experts in bending the rules by hook or crook .
