ROMANCING BOOKS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Premier's fascinating world of books in Bagalore would certainly tempt booklovers across the country to pay a visit there. I am , too, like others a frequent visitor to libraries , bookshops and wayside kabadiwallahas as well. Anyway, sky-rocketing prices of the books break my heart . What saddens me is that often the books , being high-priced , are beyond the reach of real and serious readers . Ironically , most of these bookshops don't have reader-friendly environment or , in other words , not lucky enough like Guha to locate Premiers .The only option left with these near bankrupt people ,yet booklovers, is to haunt spots which cater to their taste at affordable prices . More often than not pirated versions or second-hand books provide a sigh of relief to conscious readers, etching with a desire to own the latest arrivals as early as possible . Above all , it's a harsh reality that frequent visitors to these big shops often dont have time to leaf through books . Not everyone can be a high -profile writer or a business tycoon , having the luxury to own books at their beck and call, to strike an amicable relationship with classy booksellers .

HATING VANDE MATARAM

ARVIND K.PANDEY

It's sad and unfortunate that recitation of the Vande Mataram ,apparently , goes against the religious pathos of the Muslims .One fails to understand how can obeisance towrds one's nation can invite wrath of Allah , or , for that matter , downgrade his supremacy . It's time our secular leaders , who harp about narrow -minded approach of Hinduism-oriented parties , to take note of shifting loyalities of the Muslims .True , every religion has its own set of perceptions which are binding on its followers but does that allows one to puncture nationalism in such a blatant manner ? In fact , the Supreme court has come down heavily on numerous Hindu practices , much in tune with its progressive religious leaders , which have lost their relevance in modern times . So why are the Muslims allowed to move ahead with medieval age mindset , allowing dominance of ideas which make mockery of Constitutional provisions ? It's high time the Muslims give way to requirements of the present age backed by a change in mindset . If that's not possible , let the Hindus be granted permission to manifest the ideas of governance laid down in the Vedas .

Interestingly , going by the dictums of Imams AR Rehman ,whose soulful rendering Of Vande Matram has turned him into darling of urban youths ,should be declared " Kaafir" and therefore be outcasted with some fatwa ?

The terrorist attack in Mumbai deconstructs the myth that confidence building measures can stamp out seed of hatred from the heart of enemy .The tale becomes sorrier since this government, being trapped in inherent contradictions ,lacks a concrete agenda to combat terrorism. To put it simply , a strong line of action and determination to bulldoz the breeding grounds of terrorism are the only ways to ensure peace and stability in the nation .In retrospect, it's time to for the government to rise above dirty politics played in the name of welfare of the minoroties . The death of innocent people should by now give rise to sense of disillusionment in the hearts and minds of those who believe that anti-national elements could be curbed via display of benevolence. Yes, life goes on but it does not mean to become obvlious of the lessons it offers through tragic incidents or , for that matter , absolve the perpetrators of such heinous crimesIt's still not too late to realize that Pakistan is like a horse which needs to be whipped from time to time to keep it in a desirable direction .There is no need for government to have a green signal from its Western counterparts which , given the conflict of interests, is never going to come. However , government needs to rise above its inherent contradictions to frame a comprehensive ploicy to weed out jehadi elements . It's the absence of 'collective will' within the nation , which has encouraged the agents of al Qaeda to assault the integrity of nation . Unless we come to tame the silent supporters of jehadi operatives in the nation , it wouldn't be easy to curb the treacherous influence of Musharraf . At least it should become clear to Pakistan there is no sope for it to spell disaster in India via Salahuddins and Dawoods .

One is appalled at the fact that soft drink companies find nothing wrong in making travesty of health concerns of their consumers . It's really bafffling that they find it safe to skip their responsibility of maintaining permissible level of pesticides in cold drinks .After all, if they can spend millions om advertisements and other cheap gimmicks then what prevent them from investing into initiatives ,which lead to better health standards ? Though Kerala government step to ban Coke and Pepsi in the state isn't a sound decision , one feels that such harsh measures would alone make these companies conscious of their essential

15th August 1947 is the birthday of free India. It marks for her the end of an old era , the beginning of a new age .But we can also make it by our life and acts as a free nation an important date in a new age opening for the whole world , for the political ,social, cultural and spiritual force of humanity .15th August is my own birhday and it is naturally gratifying to me that it should have assumed this vast significance .I take the coincidence , not as fortuitous accident , but as the sanction of the divine force that guides my steps on the work with which I began life , the beginning of its full fruition .

(Babu Moshay ,Lord is the controller of death and life . Nobody can alter the Lord's wish . We are puppets in the great drama of life ,whose strings are in the hands of Lord . Nobody can predict when one has to bid adieu to life's show). At this moment of grief I could scarcely avoid myself from pondering over the truth embedded in the lines delivered by Rajesh Khanna in the legendary movie Anand .This sad reflection might enable the conscious souls to anticipate the death of Hrishikesh Mukherjee in a real way .Hrishikesh made classics like Anari(1959) , GoalMaal , Abhimaan and etc. which deciphered the intricacies of life in simple and humorous manner .In other word's , he was simply down -to -earth in intercepting life's phenemenon's .Probably , this is why philosophical moorings tainted songs of his movies .True, "Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli Hai ..." HIDING INFORMATION

ARVIND K.PANDEY

Anna Hazare must be appreciated for his tenacity to pursue critical issues with dogged spirit . Surely , the proposed amendments ,excluding the file notings away from the reach of common people , would help the bureaucrats to engage in dirty tricks without fear of backlash . I don't know what compelled the government to provide lifeline to corrupt officials . Such amendments would not only whitewash the merits of RTI but also reduce the accountability of officials towrds the grievances of ordinary people . What's the point in having an act which lacks teeth to punish the offenders ? The government has bowed down to pressure of officials , who have become experts in bending the rules by hook or crook .

ITALY WINS THE FIFA WORLD CUP CUP

ARVIND K. PANDEY

The Itlalian fans have found a royal reason to rejoice even as the cup of woes brimmeth over for France . France created a backlash by striking a bond with its "lost touch " , leading to ouster of everyone's favourite Brazil, who payed a heavy price for not coining a perfect strategy in the Quarter final clash . However, Marcello Lippi's Italy crushed the hopes of France with amazing combo of football skils and rhythum borrowed from Mozartian compositions . The World cup would be remembered for incredible performances of African teams including Ghana , the meteoric rise of Portugal and Germany's flashes of brilliance mired in youthful vigour of Klose and Podolski.Apart from Zinedine Zidane's "temporary madness " which prevented France from kissing the Trophy , the referees'infamous decisions dashed the desires of many teams -remember Australia ? It's time to prevent World cup from being dictated by the flaws of referees instead of being guided by magical manoeuvres of legendary players .

ELEVATING MUSLIMS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

The grim realities surrounding the vast chunk of Muslim section has to be tackled in a conscious manner. However , those wishing real changes should grasp the fact that time has come to curb the influence of anti-national sentiments opertaing through them .Thus , while progresive attitudes , social and economic changes come to environ them , these should in no way act as a shield to protect those who are involved in weakening the pillars of this nation .After all , one reason why the Muslim community is trapped in archaic concerns could be traced to its deep connection with outdated perceptions .The dubious role of Muslim clerics and Madarassas has to be minimised to raise standard of living of the Indian Muslims . Let's hope attempts to reform the community don't get transformed into art of survival of the political blockheads or , for that matter , serve the interests of dangerous minds .

The rise of directors like Vishal Bhardwaj and Madhur Bhandarkar mean that viewers can satiate their desire for movies with a difference. At least , Vishal has dared to carve new routes in Bollywood , which loves to dwelll in cliched perceptions .His Makdee, Omkara(based on Othello) , Maqboool(adaption of Macbeth) and etc. seem to change the creative landscape of Indian cinema .Also his music compositions in Satya and Maachis provide a glimpse into his musical mind . However, it remains to be seen whether average Indians come to appreciate his fascination for Shakespearean themes . Anyway , let's not ignore the fact that Vishal has enabled the Bollywood to experiment with out-of-the-box ideas .

The high- drama which enveloped the rescue-operation of Prince gives an insight into Indian psyche and the so-called fourth estate. Though I apppreciate the valiant efforts of army people in bringing the boy back from the jaws of death , one is appalled over the hype surrounding channels' ,apparently, first blush with the Indian reality-show. Well, Indian roads , bogged down by potholes and uncovered manholes , write script of death for commuters. Most of these deaths are either ignored or published in insignificant columns. Was the media, via case-in-point, successful in making authorities aware of the consequences of travelling on these ill-fated roads ? No.The coverage of the whole episode provided another opportunity to the channels to increase their viewrship and for the print media it was a golden chance to give a 'break' to its fascination of chasing dull-stories ! Ironically , the high-voltage drama failed to ensure better days for commoners used to make their way through deadly obstacles on road .

The political acumen of worn -out minds ensure that traumas of farmers never get the required importance. It's very clear that the grievances of the farmers can't be wiped out totally unless we come to identify with their pains in an honest way . The relief package announced by the Prime Minister for Vidarbha farmers is certainly not enough to bring substantial change in their lives . Apart from monetary help , they need well-conceived policies which strenghten social support system for them . To bring stability in their lives it's essential that re-occurencce of tragic incidents, triggered by debt related issues , dosen't take place in future . Innovative mesures like pursuading farmers to experiment with new ways of farming , availability of loans from bank at low interest rate and creation of market for their produce would work wonder for them . Of course , there is urgent need to keep them at a safe distance from the clutches of middlemen . Lastly , let's not foget the fact that relief packages often get reduced to nothingness by corruption in high places .

KILLLING INNOCENT PEOPLE IN JAMMU AND KASHMIR

ARVIND K.PANDEY

The ease with which militants are eliminating minorities in Jammu & Kashmir brings the efiiciency of government agencies under scannner . After all, the installation of people-friendly government there should have curbed the influence of terrorists . On the contrary , the terrorists groups have stepped on to aggressive methods ,wiping out minorities, who seem to have become pawn in the big game played between Centre and the State . Ironically , we are patting our back for taking confidence buiding measures to new heights , with little realization that they haven't prevented terrorists from playing with the lives of innocents .It's high time both Central and State governments come to realize that soft measures won't work wonder . It's better they stop living in a dreamland .

THE BHAGAVAD GEETA : SUPREME KRISHNA'S ETERNAL REVELATION

by waves @ 2006-08-17 - 18:21:52

THE BHAGAVAD GEETA:SUPREME KRISHNA'S ETERNAL REVELATION

(Published In SOHAM ,DECEMBER ,05)

(ARVIND K.PANDEY)

In the Bhagavad-Gita lies the locus of hope for humanity suffering from the ills of modernization. The contemporary echo is full of fire and furry, which has compelled people to take shelter under the tree of knowledge. Lord Krishna, who was the fountainhead of knowledge, had anticipated well in advance the vacuum which was going to become part of lives of future generations. And thus essence of Vedanta with all its glory attained its pinnacle with manifestation of the Bhagavad-Gita- the Song Celestial. In present age when loud-mouthed supporters of false values, primarily unleashed by globalization, have gained prominence, the luster of Lord’s words remains unfaded. One of the reasons for Impersonal Brahman gaining individuality is to reinforce our faith in higher ideals. Jayadeva in Gita Govinda makes no concession while showering praises upon this most adorable Lord:

Lord of all the stars that cluster

In the sky, swiftest and slowest,

Lord of highest, Lord of lowest-

Manifests himself to mortals.

Before throwing light on problems tearing a part our social fabric which could unmistakably be attributed to parochialism and chauvinism environing our society, I would first like to unfold the Bhagavad-Gita’s mesmerizing attributes. Being storehouse of dictums on subjects ranging from room philosophy to psychology, from economics to sociology and from rules of conduct to sequence of events leading to origin of the world, it’s abundantly clear why it has come to be prized possession of not only the Hindus but of all men wishing to interpret life in a scientific way. One needs not to be Einstein to understand that Gita lays out a blueprint for the growth of human beings. The Bhagavad-Gita forms part of Prasthana-traya scriptures, an assemblage of three scriptures that play a decisive role in chiseling perceptions of Hinduism to make them relevant to times, the Brahma Sutras and the Upanishads being the other two.

During Mahabharata age, a period whose exact determination is bone of contention among modern day scholars but it is vaguely supposed to be the beginging of Kaliyuga, the most enlightening exposition of the Hindus came into existence on the earthly plan. The cosmic price of Kauravas haughtiness eventually turned out to be their total elimination at the hands of Pandavas. Obviously, pre-war scenario has become too intellectually challenging and emotionally nerve- wrecking for Arjuna, the most adorable companion of Madhusudana. On the other hand, for Krishna this nightmarish situation instead of sounding death knell prepared ground for emergence of life-giving philosophy, the panacea for phobias of future generations. He was not only a great statesman but a terrific visionary as well. He didn’t take much time to realize that come a time when moral and spiritual dilemmas are going to spell doom for human beings residing on this planet, especially for souls dealing in virtues. There has to be a standard manual which can be referred to at times of mayhem so that its negative influences are effectively counteracted. Ultimately, the charioteer Krishna transformed himself into the Divine Master who is really interested in upliftment of human consciousness. What he delivered was not something new but it being quagmire of hope continues to delight us till today. Gita’s relevance could be gauged from the fact that each generation produces a wide range of commentaries penned by people not confined to the arena of religion alone. The commentaries of Saint Gyaneshwar, Adi Shankaracharya, Bal Gangadhar Tilak and A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada represent characteristics of their ‘Kala’ in a distinguished manner, unfolding the gems hidden in it more or less at par with mindset of those around. This also explains why Ramcharita Manas enjoys overwhelming support of the masses. Because Goswami Tulsidas was more interested in expanding the cause of Lord Rama than display of his intellectual superiority or, for that matter, exhibition of knowledge of scriptures.

The Bhagavad-Gita is a treatise on metaphysical aspects of Vedas but it is still able to strikes emotional chord with average reader. Keeping in mind the needs of the common man, Krishna wisely infused it with unputdownable practical teachings orbiting around themes of the Upanishads. Its appealing rationality and its universality, the two important facts largely responsible for its iconic status, says Swami Ranganathananda of Rama Krishna Math are enough to term it as a perennial Manava Dharma Sastra. Krishna immediately felt the conscience of Arjuna, when he raised doubt over the impossibility of gaining total control over mind by exclaiming that ‘cancalam hi manah Krsna’. He didn’t subject Arjun to a humiliating scenario for showing lack of subtlety. Instead, Kesava supported his contention and told him to attain it ‘with suitable practise and detachment’. Being governed by suspicion and confusion when Arjuna inquires about the fate of unsuccessful aspirants, he could have easily lost his temper over Arjuna’s futile curiosity. On the contrary, in order to keep aspirants on the right track he states in chapter Six that ‘a transcendentalist engaged in auspicious activities does not meet with destruction either in this world or in the spiritual world; one who does good, My friend, is never overcome by evil’. Unlike psuedo-intellectuals of present age, who nearly dissipate the understanding power of their followers with bombardment of perverse observations, Krishna chooses to boost up the confidence of Arjuna with air of optimism whenever it sinks to unwanted level. Look at the ideas churned out by the so-called progressive literature; it’s either too wayward or too complex that it defies the reader to take it seriously.

The Bhagavad-Gita contains the ABC of an integrated life. All it aims at is channelization of human desires in a dignified manner. Since it’s apparently impossible to transcend Lord’s maya-mama maya durtyaya, the lord instructs his followers to lend their ears to his proclamations with faith to be established in perfect union with ‘Great Self’, something, which occurs when one, rises above bondage created by three modes of material nature, namely Sattva, Rajas and Tamas. What has come to become intrisinic feature of present class of men and women is that they have adopted a cynical attitude towards anything associated with ancient order of things. So, sterile discussions and stupid intellectual pursuits create a permanent gulf between them and the ‘Ultimate Truth’. That is precisely why Krishna in chapter Seven confesses that ‘All these devotees (read Artah, jijnasuh, artha-arthi and jnani) are undoubtedly magnanimous souls, but he who is situated in knowledge of me I consider him to be just like my own self’. In other words, he is referring to a balanced approach. Why are we so depressed and frustrated today? Because demonical desires can never be fulfilled through balanced means. When we try to accomplish these goals we end up as dissatisfied souls, which invariably leads to irreparable damage. What Krishna wants to convey is that heart and mind should have a striking harmony between them. Swami Vivekanand once observed that he prefers heart over head. Anyway, it’s essential for development of human self that intellectual fervour remains in league with embodiments of heart.

We exhibit wide range of temperaments. A set of beliefs liked by one person may be quite appalling to the other person. Against this background it would be un-ethical and suicidal to impose upon the mass a particular kind of ideology. The Bhagavad-Gita believes that variation in means is since qua non-for survival of human beings. That establishes the fact that our beloved Lord was a psychologist par excellence. So, Karma- yoga was prescribed for those whom earth-shattering endeavors were close to heart; Bhakti-Yoga came to be associated with people having a developed heart faculty while Jnana-Yoga got identified with men dealing in intellectual tantrums. Generally, they run parallel to each other with one of them gaining pre-dominance as the major modus operandi. In post-modern age when complexities have become part and parcel of our lives, an intimate communion with what Lord has expressed in the Eighteen chapters could catapult life to highest realm of self-realization. When a loyal devotee depicts even an iota of virtues mentioned in these chapters (for instance doing devotional service with mind and intelligence fixed on his divine form), he is assured by Krishna to find a permanent place in His abode. For such souls Krishna says, ‘I am the swift deliverer from the ocean of birth and death’. Sadly, each Yuga has its own share of blockheads, who flaunt their absurd perceptions in the name of revolutionary isms. Then, there are ‘False-Gods’, who try to downplay the importance of Sruti’s declarations. Krishna has something in store for them as well when he warns them of meeting with deadly fate-atha cet tvam ahankaran na srosyasi vinanksyasi.

Finally, let us remain whole- heartedly in the line of His teachings so that glory of Lord becomes our own. And, when someone like Arjuna gets a glimpse of it, he would like Arjuna be moved to express that ‘No one is equal to you, nor can anyone be one with you. How then could there be anyone greater than you within the three worlds, O Lord of immeasurable power?’

ARVIND K. PANDEY

(Published In FRONTLINE ,AUGUST 25,06)

The broad and varied landscape of Indo-US nuclear deal should not get trapped in "hidden agenda" of the US. The Indian government should not let US dilute the agreement reahed upon during the President Bush visit to India . There is no need to subject our fast-breeder programmes including future nuclear tests at the wishes of the US government .It's really baffling that 'Iran angle 'is bing used by the US to twist our arm . However , India should make it clear to the US that if it fails to uphold the letter and spirit of the original daft India would abandon the deal . In fact , there is some merit in the BJP's criticism that we might end up paying a high price for something which dosen't serve the cause of nation in a significant way .

The task we now set before ourselves is not mechanical but moral and spiritual .We aim not at the alteration of a form of government but the buliding up of a nation . Of that task politics is a part , but only a part . We shall devote ourselves not to politics alone , nor to social questions alone , nor to theology or literature or science by themselves , but we include all these in one entity which we believe to be all important, the dharma , the national religion which we also believe to be universal . There is mighty law of life , a great principle of human evolution , a body of spiritual knowledge and experience of which India has always been destined to be guradian , exemplar and missionary .This is Santana Dharma , the eternal religion .We must return and seek the sources of life and strength within ourselves .

PUNISH THE TRAITORS

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published in INDIA TODAY , AUGUST ,06)

The grim new-twist in the political landscape
of the nation speaks volume about the shallow mindset of people at the helm of affairs . Let the revelations of Jaswant Singh be not unceremoniously dumped to hide the nefarious designs of people involved in anti-national interests . Not a long time back the UPA government circumvented the startling utterings of Mitrokhin , which established previous Congress governments close links with erstwhile USSR via KGB agents . It's really unfortunate that heated debate over such sensitive issues never lead to their appropiate and judicious culmination , forget about putting these "Jaichands" behind the bars. Perhaps it's time to ensure that foreign powers don't come to shape the destiny of our nation .

INDO-PAK TALKS LOSE SIGNIFICANCE

ARVIND K .PANDEY

(Published In OUTLOOK ,AUGUST 21,06)

Let's accept the harsh truth that the continuance of dialogue with Pakistan has not resulted in downfall in terrorist activities . The revelations of Nawaj Shairf add a sinister twist to the eforts aimed at improving relationships. It gives an insight into the mindset of Pakistani rulers , who are not botherd to break the diplomatic shackles.Though the uttterings of Sharif are an attempt to weaken the political platform of Musharraf , one cannot ignore the implications inherent in it. Even our former Prime Minister Atal Vajpayee has put a seal of approval on the validity of Sharif's statements. This should be enough for government to keep in mind contradictions enveloping Musharraf. The government should make it clear to Pakistan that unless it comes to wipe out terrorist camps operating in its land, the so-called efforts to put things back on track would never materialise. It's really shocking to know that establishing of links via introduction of bus services has enabled terrorist to further sharpen their claws. Against this backdrop let's not commit the blunder to pursue a soft policy towards a nation adept in treachorous means .Or else , such moves merely to appease the minorities would prove fatal for internal security of the nation .

TACKLING RESERVATION

ARVIND K .PANDEY

(Published In ALIVE ,AUGUST ,06)

Let me put the records straight by making it clear that reservation in absence of creation of jobs would only lead to mayhem .Unfortunately ,the ambiguous nature of affirmative action (AA)has come to mean progress at cost of marginalisation of vast section of society . In fact , reservation has become an effective medium to enlarge the vote-bank . Nobody is against the rise of lower section of the society , however , it should not mean subverting the principles of Constitution in a blatant manner , much less weakening the pillars of social world .The world at large seem to be embracing attributes , which promote excellence . However , the Indians seem to be bogged down by man -made restrictive institutions , clasifications and provisions . Had reservations been really the solution of social evils plaguing the lower echelons of society , they would by now have sustantially changed their lives . On the contrary , the reservations have only led to greater fragmentation of society or , in other words , greater caste-consciousness among them .This was not what our constitution makers , who wished all round development of people belonging to lower strata, dreamt of . Perhaps , what these castes need are programmes , which are aimed at total transformation of their lives instead of approach coming in the way of sound growth of mind and intellect . Right from the days of early schooling , they need to be provided state-of -the -art facilities , which allow them to walk on road to prosperity with proper bent of mind .

Shah Rukh Khan recently stated that " I will continue drinking soft drinks , irrespective of what people say ." . Well, it's time for followers to reject culture of star-worshipping .It's height of absurdity to issue such a statement when it's quite clear that pesticides present in the soft drinks work against one's vitality . In fact , in many schools programmes are being conducted by eminent doctors ,who advice the school childeren to refrain from usage of fast foods including beverages . As per news reports several colleges in California have boycotted the stalls of Coca Cola . Shah Rukh Khan who has participated in many health campaigns should have thought over implications of such an atrocious copnfession .This would only dampen as well derail the efforts of people aimed at raising a better generation of youths.

ARE IITians REALLY SEEKERS OF TRUTH ?

ARVIND K.PANDEY

(Published In THE TELEGRAPH ,August 11,06)

The well -orchestrated protest of Narendra Modi by two IIT professors in the Chennai programme does not go well with their profession embedded in spirit of inquiry. Gauging from the inherent motive of the Ramachandra Guha's arguments in his article "Protest In A New Theatre " in The Telegraph(August 05,06) , one can safely conclude that it's an another veiled attack on Narendra Modi . Though neither I am die-hard supporter of Modi nor I am displeased over the way he has become butt of ridicule among so-called custodians of society but let me state explicitily that duplicity of this very class has turned our nation into batllefield of dangerous extremists .After all, why are these "seekers of truth ", the IITians , so silent over the increasing menace of Islamic radicals ? Haven't their well-engineered attacks killed innocent people including an IIT professor in Bangalore and , above all, made inroads into places falling in high security zones ? It shouldn't be out of place to suggest that one finds the intensity missing in protests, condemning the killing of Hindus , organised by the secular group. On the contrary , one finds them engaged in maddening protests on a slightest information proclaiming about the dangers to the well-beiing of Muslims in a foreign land !. Well, it's time for them to block the growth of terrorists and their supporters whose covert/overt help has turned India into a virtual hell . Apart from bothering about the Telehraph's invitation to Modi , let they be equally concerned about the utterings of devil's advocates -the secret supporters of jehadi operatives.
