MURKY DEVELOPMENTS IN BURMA
ARVIND K PANDEY

The murky developments in Burma must be dissapointing for Suu Kyi working for restoration of democratic norms in the country .General Than Shwe military regime can't be overturned without the active support of Burmese people. The best way to attain it would be to instill rebellious spirit within citizens besides blocking the business venture with neighbouring countries like Singapore . I am amazed that US which has been so vocal about the violation of democratic principles in Iraq is silent over the plight of Burmese held captive to brutal rulers. This selective boo-boo of the global watchdog cast doubts over its intents .Even the Tibetans reeling under the sadistic pursuits of Chinese government have been left at mercy of their fate. This explains why US talk of better global system fails to exicte us.One would like to know from the advocates of Human Rights , and from so-called global players, that why they have given blanket approval to dubious regime in Burma and Tibet ?

STOP TARNISHING GANDHI'S IMAGE
ARVIND K PANDEY

Let me state that it has become part and parcel of the so-called progressive media groups to tarnish the image of leading figures of yesteryears. Instead of becoming tools of understanding these leading luminaries have turned into objects of mockery. Caricatured pieces having flawed observations and out of context references become the means to strengthen the position of second -rated magazines in the market . I think the country , which has not been able to showcsae Gandhi's ideals in real perspective , does not desreve the right to probe his life in such a wild manner . Better we learn to anticipate him with right bent of mind instead of mirroring him in our derailed mindsets .

FRIENDLY CRICKET, UNFRIENDLY RELATIONS
ARVIND K PANDEY

Friendliness has enveloped Indo-pak series ,held in recent times , but fails to substantiate his arguments given in its support .It's not absence of jingoistic feelings which has given birth to amiable atmosphere in Indo-Pak clashes but dominance of commercial spirit that has dampned their enthusisam . Even the spirit of friendliness is not conclusive proof of amicable relationship outside cricket zone . Has any cricket -series between them led to decrease in Pak sponsored terrorism ? Let's not read much into this part time friendliness. If India -Pak series today fails to excite us , the reason probably lies in falling standard of cricket contests besides developments that have turned it into money -spinning venture .Unlike bygone era when players played , the cricket field is now centre of brand images ,guided by market- oriented consciuosness , leading to decline of interest in them .

If recent flicks on Bhagat Singh failed miserably , it's because they were loud-appealed ,lacking coherence in plots .The success of Rang De Basanti , however, proves that nationalistic perceptions can attract moolah provided they are well -packaged besides supported by promotional gimmicks .Anyway , commodification of 'swadeshi' beliefs is not too bad if it prevents the erosion of values .

(Published In INDIA TODAY , MARCH 06,06)

Governments in India have failed to feel the pulse of the rural youth . Not only they have been shrewdly kept away from ' mainstream consciousness' but also they have found themselves at the receiving end of exploitative tendencies of political stalwarts. It's really baffling that concrete efforts are missing for channelising the potential of such a vast chunk of people in a constructive way . In absence of programmes for their betterment , they are compelled to either lead an animal's life or turn into criminals , being lured by glitz and hype of elite class.

MOZART :THE POWER OF MUSIC

ARVIND K PANDEY

The "Mozart effect " seems to have motivated the Western world to unlock the mysterious effect of music on the human brain , enabling it to get rid of alzhheimer's effect and etc. However , to the Indians it's healing impact has never been a secret .Infact , nada vidya is one of the mediums to establish communion with Lord .The various raga and raginis, sung at specific hours , lead to synergetic augmentation of the streams of vital energy flowing within the human body. For example , Raga hindola leads to mental concentration, Raga Sohini pacifies anger , and Raga Jaijaivanti controls mental instabilty , to name some .Precisely this is why Sufi singers and the Sankirtana groups leave such a hypnotic effect on their listeners . Suffice it to say , the musical notes have great capacity to mould the subconsciousness .

ARVIND K PANDEY

Technology also brings distortions besides uleashing beneficial changes .Obviously , bombardment of spams , host of ads promoting Viagra and other lesser important data turn your personal computer into a clicking time -bomb .Against this backdrop, some precious moments dedicated to meditation rescues our being from being held hostage to pills . Infact , the way Western countries are adhering to the Hindu yogic techniques and the Vipaasana methods put a seal of approval on authenticity of transcedental attributes inherent in Eastern culture .However , the best way to keep peace of mind intact is to remain in sync with virtuous lifestyle backed-up by healthy balace beween desire and need . How can a crooked person , having ' bogus' desires, claim ownership over peacful mind ? Finally , a sound mind has its origin in heart ,which cares for others .

FADING VALUES

by waves @ 2006-02-23 - 18:00:21

FADING VALUES
ARVIND K PANDEY

Journalists are no longer guided by progressive impulse.Glossing over abuse of ' the power of pen ' , it becomes clear that media persons ,in recent times , care least about objectivity and authenticity of facts . Being stripped of its ' guiding star ' attributes , journalism has now become ,akin to any other profession , a way to eke out livlihood. Yes , it has gone series of transformation to morph into profession from mission . Referreing to Sonia Gandhis speech at 10th anniverasry function of Outlook that ' all too often, we see needless sensationalism, we see the creeping ingress of what, for want of a better description, is known as tabloid journalism.' , I wish to state that not much importance should be given to such outpourings mired in preachy flavour . After all , she represents the party , which has produced highest number of crooks and corrrupts. A party which has been in the past guilty of cruelly sabotaging the freedom of not only press but of all those working whole -heartedly for the progresss of naion could not turn into advocate of transperency and fair play . Right from the Jeep scandal to the Volcker's report it has made ' double speak and ' misrepresentation ' part and parcel of India's work culture . Against this backdrop one should not be surprised if one perceives little difference between editor's room and dingy room located in the red light area. Both have apparently got reduced to centres of exploitation .
Talking about emerging pattrns in the field of journalism what's shocking that ' breach of an individual's privacy ' has turned into a norm .Considering the fact that Constitutional provisions are unambiguously aimed at its protection ,the frivolous mannerisms of journalists do not set high standards . To an extent the journalists seem to have borrowed their ethics from politicians who leave no stone unturned in toppling the career of their rivals .Look at the way juicy stories about Sanjay Joshi relation with his close BJP colleague, revelations of Amar Singh so-called fatalist conversations with his intimate friends and many other such trash news item are being hotly discussed among the media circles, the way these news items have taken edge over grim issues haunting the lives of the underprivilged. I would just like to know from these journalists why they are shy of addressing issues , which have compelled the happless citiizens to reel under unspeakable pains ? Why they are not pursuing the findings of investigative reports , leading to its final culmination in a fairest manner ? Shouldn't they be not only interested in their mega presentation but also take note of the subsequent developments ?
Though I am not against the expulsion of BJP MPs in cash-on-query ,the whole episode is gross violation of natural justice , something rightly pointed out by Vijay Kumar Melhotra .Though I appreciate the sting operations efforts in catching the people involved in murky deals , one cannot ignore the emergence of a disturbing phenomenon . Viewing it from a different angle, aren't they guilty of breaching one's privacy ? Again in a mad rush to expose the 'scandals ' haven't they encroached upon individual's right of natural justice as in most of the cases the appparently guilty people come to be branded offenders without given chance of proving their innocence ? Let's be very clear that at the heart of these operations is the urge to gain instant success instead of a honest desire to uproot corrupt malpractises prevalent in the society . So long they remain fuelled by ' sensationalism ' , I am afraid a conscious citizen would always be reluctant in giving them their due .They should stop being both accuser and judge .

In Judith Milllers case , the New York Times journalist sent to jail , it has been clearly established that law of the land is above the imunity provides in regard to source revelation .Journalists cannot enter into dubious deals , which act as threat for national integrirty .Infact , no one is above the principles enshrined in the constituition. .Given his penchant for appplication of fair means to achieve the end , I don't know how Gandhi wold have reacted to present age jounalistic notions , insisting on getting information by hook or crook .
Since there is a skeleton in everyone's cupboard , does it provide journalist license to expolit the individual? Ironically , the channels do not want to lose the opportunity of cashing -in -on man's natural flaws .Instead of allowing the person to rectify his mistakes , the channels ,acting both as an acccuser and judge , wipe out all the possibilites of the offenders healthy revival .Just see what grim turn Gudiya's life has taken becuse of mindlessness on part of the TV channels .The trials and tribulations of Gudiya have been put to rest by death .However, she has left behind some disturbing questions .It's evidently clear that had TV channels kept themselves away from her life , her pains would not have escalated to such grim heights. Ironically, mushrooming TV channels seem to thrive on breach of an individual's privacy. Instead of cashing -in-on the agony of individuals , it's better they learn to ponder over the impact of entertainment cum news stories .Why can't they understand that such disturbing inroads into one's life open the can of problems for sensitive souls , which soon get shaped into volcanic events over which he/she has no contro l.One expects that in future people's pains would not turn into a channel's pride ! Cetainly , it's time for the media to do some introspection to set high precedents in future .Let 'breaking news ' don't break innocent lives .

RESPECT PRIVACY
( MERE AGNEIN MEIN TUMHARA KYA KAAM HAI ?)

ARVIND K PANDEY

The Sting opertations carried out by so-called private spying agencies are blatant violation of an individual's privacy . Infact , this technological terrorism has become become order of the day , which has scant respect for private confines of human beings. The way ultra-sound machines have led to phenomenal increase in cases of female foeticide , one could in the same breath hold these spycams gulity of death of private lives .These sting operations , which have become tool to harrass one's opponents , are symbolic of falling ethical standards of our time adept in sacrificing idealistic perceptions at the altar of derailed big and mighty . Sadly , it's no more easy to protect the sanctity of private lives in global world held captive to spycam terror .Can we still croon , the spycam invasion being order of the day "Mere agnein mein tumhara kya kaam hai?".No,not anymore.

EAST AND WEST :PLAYING DOCTOR -DOCTOR
ARVIND K PANDEY

(Published In Outlook , FEB.27,06)

It's quite apparent that foreigners have been lured by the low cost qualitative services provided by the Indian doctors . But I am little surprised the way our leading political figures ,actors and sportpersons never think twice in heading towards Western countries merely to undergo minor treatment . At the sane time there is urgent need to to provide standard health facilities to poor sections of people . Just pay a visit to goverrnment run hospitals and you are bound to intercept doctors callously indifferent towards your case .The unhygenic atmosphere there leaves even healthy ones into bittter state of mind . So this ' medical boom ' does reinforce our faith in capabilities of Indian doctors but unless it is backed up by better facilities at health centres in villages, the enthusiasm over this achievement is quite premature .

It's the incisive insight of Rushdie which has enabled him to remain the ' hotspot ' in the literary world for such a long period . His profound understanding of the human nature allows him to conceive wide range of interesting characters in plots close to the real life, something so evident in Shalimar The Clown .Ironically , close encounters with conflicts of both inner and external world has helped the writer to wrest a larger -than -life space in the literary arena . Rushdie , too, happliy embodies this paradox of writer's life to evolve into a better writer as the time passes by.

ARVIND K PANDEY

(Published In The Telegraph ,FEB.20,06)

The execution of latest whim of the government to determine the strength of the Muslims in various government organisations including the Ministry Of Defence means stepping on the volcanic developments .What's the point in taking stock of their situation in such a divisive mannner ? Are other communities living in paradise or have Muslims been denied the right of dignified living in the nation which has compelled the government to take note of their strength ? The toxin of such divisive tendencies does not augur well for the integrity of the nation . The government's inclination towards nuances of this nature , instead of working for the sound development of nation, only confirms the suspicion that dubious agenda of Left parties has become the guiding force .Well, a meandering attempt to create a better situation for a particular community is bound to take its toll on the well -being of the neglected huge mass ,relling under critical problems. Such ' selective wooing ' is sure to fan flames of agony .

The dominance of crass materialism has heaped upon the present generation a sense of alienation , compelling them to be left alone at the summit. Probably , this is why they get hooked to drugs to ward of their loneliness. The fast-paced life of ours has no place for sense of belonging --a factor which prevented earlier generation from disintegration. The message is clear: Revive the old order of living to save them from the harshness of modernity. Indeed, old order must make way for newer ones but should that take place at expense of human bonds?

STEVE WAUGH :MY ROLE MODEL'S AUTOBIOGRAPHY
ARVIND K PANDEY

The imaginative romance of pennning an autobiograpy always haunts leading personalities in fag end of the life .Given the fact that people are always interested in knowing ' hidden secrets ' of the celebreties , the autobiographies manage to attract huge molllah ; however , their literary value in the whole process never get due attention. Steve Waugh has been an outstanding player , a successful captain who maged to carve shrewd tactics , without losing inner poise , amidst difficult situations. and a perfect husband who not only managed to raise his childeren but also turn out to be ' messiah' for orphan childeren placed in a foreign nation . No wonder , his numerous awe -inspiring qualities would compel readers to turn up the pages of ' Out of my comfort zone ' .I don't agree with the writer's observation that interactions with bitter episodes or , for that matter , brush with scandals alone make the autoboigraphy readable.Well, Clinton's autobiography might have hinged on his affair with Lewinsky but for the rest of the people a life well -lived alone decides the fate of autobiography .However , they must be written with candid sincerity , probing one's life with least duplicity .One reason why autobiography dissapoint is that they turn out to be experiment with false beliefs , a medium to extend one's ego further .

ARVIND K PANDEY

When the world is hell bent on adopting safer means to ward off HIV/AIDS ,I am asking the people- in- large to keep Kamasutra at bay . The message is clear :Don't ask for KS i.e Kamasutra . For many 'What's in a name " dilemma holds little meaning .But the devastation caused by Kamasutra , the deadly computer virus , has forced the people to re-think over 'name's effect ' . The havoc cused by the virus also confirms the fact that world is in the grip of people who believe that there is method in madness .
One may or may not believe in the power of name but have a look at Bollywood .Here most of yesteryears superstars found it safe to discard their parental names to climb theladder of success . To an extent that even Amitabh found it safe to cling to 'Vijay ' , and quite successfully too , to add new dimesions in his career . Even J.Omprakash the producer of Rajesh Khanna starrer 'Aan Miloen Sajana ', a blockbuster, named all his movies with names beginning with "A".Believe it or not the 'name does work wonder though it's hard to decipher the principle involved .And sometimes make a mess .The older couples who, having a religious bent of mind , thronged at cinema halls to watch 'Hare Krishna Hare Rama " returned back cursing the maker of the movie .The movie was full of skimpy-dressed girls ,having to do nothing with religion .It dealt with rehabilitation of drug-addict girl.

Being an ambitious person aiming at sky is quite a different thing from being a noble person thinking of a refined persona . Also an ambitious person is more likely to be caried away by wrong means in a mad rush to remain above his peers .More often than not there has always been shady elements involved in the scripts of ambitious man journey to pinnacle of success. In my eyes, the man in league with healthy ideals not only remains content but also makes the world a better place to live in.On the other hand, an ambitious person gets trappped in worthless pursuits , leading to failures and diseases . Shakespeare's Brutus is classic example of man destroyd by overweening ambitions . In nutshell , it's desire , triggered by karmas of previous births, which shapes the ambitions of a person. The sad thing is that desires never die.The message is clear : Be a virtuous person instead of fanning ambitions.

It seems that commercial interests have blocked their ability to sense the dangers which the river Yamuna would have to live with once the proposed stadium in New Delhi comes into existence. Both Tsunami and flood in New Orleans have taught us that ecological patterns are to be maintained to avoid disasterous consequences. We miss no opportunity to criticise our ancestors for being in league with petty rituals, for instance worshiping stones and trees, but we failed to read the motive behind theirs acts, which were symbolic of their deep attachment with environment. Ironically , today we might we in tune with times but we have lost the capacity to honour the bonds with nature .Indeed, a great loss.

Other than making way for headlines , his natural flare for giving birth to futile clashes serves little purpose.Lastly , he does not realize that masses like to emulate their leaders . Gandhi did not condemn the scientific temper of the West, but he objected to the use of scientific discoveries against humanity. He pointed out that scientific inventions alone would not be able to bring the desired change in the world if the darkness of the mind is not dispelled. Sadly, his worst fears have come true today with environmental degradation, nuclear race, water pollution and similar other problems plaguing the world. Gandhi rightly placed transformation of our inner being above that of the external world. He perhaps foresaw the crisis of the modern world in which scientific advance has lead to a sharp polarization in the world, with the technologically advanced nations browbeating the not-so-advanced into subservience.

INDIA:ROMANCING WITH TIME- BOMBS
ARVIND K PANDEY

Hamas's victory is symbolic of collective will of people making a smooth way for preservation of state caught in turmoils . Even as the happenings in Western countries are buzzing with paranoic and ruth reactions , the Hamas is determined to give voice to the crushed emotions of Palestine .In fact , both West and Israel are guilty of pursuing profoundly complicated divisive policies . ' By maintaining economic prostration , social despair and political confusion among the Palestinians' Israel has managed to gain upper hand .Strangely , India ,too, is heading towards similar crisis , albeit the victim is not a minority entity but a majority reeling under dubious policies of secular govrernments .Just look at the threatening developments in India . The madarasas in bordering areas of West Bengal and other remote corners of various states are romancing with illegal activities , the Naxalite movements is steadily and slowly sowing seeds of unrest and terror and the Maoists , being aware of India's fragmented policy towards Nepal , aren't afraid to engage in lawlessness .Small wonder then that coailition partners have become used to ' politics of blackmail '.Even the Congress Party in a mad rush to appease the minorities keep playing 'reservation politics , which till now has succumbed to Court's interevention .Now it has come up with "Minority Commission" to look into the affairs of minorities .All this is happening in a ' secular state ' .One need not to be Einstein to understand that India has become playground of vested interests. Under this background just imagine what would happen if ' majority ' gives way to aggressive means to wipe out the political confusion and disorder ,caused by the shrewd minds , to put the nation back on rails . Hamas is representative of ' power ' born out of Israel's refusal to give space to tortured souls .It's not hard to imagine that world could witness rise of similar power , owing to repressive policies of minds dwelling in ignorance .
